River Hawks Take Down Dartmouth, 81-48

HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Ayinde Hikim (Washington, D.C.) scored a career-high 25 points, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (2-0) took down the Dartmouth Big Green (0-2), 81-48, on Friday night at Leede Arena.

"This was as good of a road win as we have had here at UMass Lowell," said Head Coach Pat Duquette. "We executed our defensive game plan, especially in the first half. Ball pressure was great and set the tone early on. Ayinde was as good as it gets, and we got good contributions from a lot of the other guys. It's the first of six straight road games for us, so it was good to get off to a good start."

Hikim, who matched a personal best with 10 field goals, got it done on both ends of the court, adding a game-high four steals alongside his 25 points. Junior Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) contributed 14 points for the second straight game, including a career-high three shots from beyond the arc, and senior Abdoul Karim Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali) chipped in with 10 points and a game-high eight boards. In addition to shooting 51.6% (33-64) from the field as a unit, UMass Lowell impressed defensively, holding the Big Green to 32.7% (18-55) shooting, and blocking seven shots with 12 steals.

The River Hawks offense got to work early, as Hikim connected on two jumpers and a free throw to put his team up 5-0. Although Dartmouth responded with five of their own, an and-one by senior Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) sparked a 10-0 run for the visitors, highlighted by a trey from senior Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.), to give UMass Lowell the 15-5 edge with just over 15 minutes to play in the first half.

Back-to-back baskets by the Big Green cut the difference down to single digits, but the River Hawks retaliated quickly, using a 12-2 scoring advantage that was capped off by a three from junior Andres Fulgencio (Englewood, N.J.) to extend the lead to 27-11 with 10:20 on the clock. After baskets by both sides made it 32-17 only three minutes later, two consecutive dunks by Brooks helped ignite the offense, leading to 12 unanswered River Hawk points, including six from Hikim. Meanwhile, the defense locked up the opposition, holding the hosts to only two points in the final seven minutes, propelling UMass Lowell to a 49-19 edge at the half.

Coming out of the locker room, Hikim picked up right where he left off, converting on another and-one opportunity, followed by a layup from Covington to put the River Hawks up, 60-23, their largest lead of the night, with 15:58 still to play. Dartmouth battled back with an 8-0 run of its own, but sophomore Brayden O'Connor (Ottawa, Ontario) sank two layups and senior Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) threw down a dunk to counter.

The two teams continued to battle it out, but a three by Hikim and two more from Morris III in the final minutes helped seal the 81-48 victory.

The River Hawks will continue their six-game road trip, as they head south to take on Georgia Tech on Tuesday, November 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at McCamish Pavilion.
