10/1/2023 3:08:00 PM

Box Score BURLINGTON, VT – UMass Lowell women's soccer (1-6-5, 1-1-1 AE) fell to the Vermont Catamounts (7-4-0, 1-2-0 AE) 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field.

Fifth year Julia Edholm (Stockholm, Sweden) scored the lone goal for the River Hawks and senior Calliste Brookshire (Kingston, Mass.) added the assist. Redshirt senior Taylor Burgess (Mendon, Mass.) made six saves on the afternoon.

"I think we had a solid start to the game and things changed after the penalty kick. It took us awhile to get going and get organized today," said head coach Mira Novak. "I'm looking for a reaction from the team this week and see how much this matters. Today showed that us if you don't show up in confernece, this can happen. It's a humbling lesson and we have two tough games coming up so this is a message that we need to execute better on the day."

Calliste Brookshire had the game's first shot on goal in the opening minute of the game, getting an early chance for the River Hawks. A big collision in the UMass Lowell box resulted in the Catamounts being awarded a penalty kick in the 5th minute. Frances O'Donnell scored from the spot and gave the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Burgess made a big stop in the 8th minute to keep the deficit at one as the Catamounts picked up the pressure. Vermont doubled the lead in the 11th minute with O'Donnell's second of the game. Junior Laura Cetina (Galicia, Spain) pounced on a loose ball but saw her shot from just outside the box saved in the 14th minute.

The River Hawks had a spell of possession in the Vermont half and created several chances, but the Catamount defense blocked shots from senior Chloe Layne (Wrentham, Mass.) and Laura Cetina to keep their lead at two. Despite a few good buildup play and several chances, the River Hawks could not cut into the lead and went into the break trailing by two.

Vermont tacked on a third goal in the 51st minute to take a commanding lead early in the second half. The hosts continued to attack, forcing Burgess into a diving save to push the ball onto the crossbar and out for a corner. Burgess made another highlight reel stop in 61st minute, pushing a shot wide of the post.

The Catamounts scored a fourth goal in the 63rd minute and another in the 72nd minute to extend the lead. A goal from a free kick late made it 6-0 Catamounts. Julia Edholm got the River Hawks on the board late in the game, finishing a free kick from Calliste Brookshire.

Next up, the River Hawks have a week off before hosting Binghamton at Cushing Field. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. on October 8.
