River Hawks Visit Bryant for Sunday Matinee

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (1-15, 0-5 AE) heads to Smithfield, Rhode Island to take on the Bryant Bulldogs (6-10, 1-6 AE) on Sunday afternoon.

The River Hawks and Bulldogs meet for the 38th time in program history. UMass Lowell has won the last two meetings between these teams.
 
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks fell to 0-6 in conference play after falling to UMBC on January 18. Kaylen Banwareesingh scored a team-high 17 points, while Mili Carrera, Jaliena Sanchez and Jaini Edmonds each added in 10 points. The River Hawks shot 44% from the field and 43% from behind the arc. Banwareesingh hit 3-4 from three and added two blocks to lead the team. The senior also led the team with nine rebounds, just one shy of her third double double of the season. Carrera had her most efficient game of the season, shooting 3-4 from the field with an assist and two steals.
 
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Bryant welcomes the River Hawks after falling to 1-6 in conference play after dropping a 71-67 overtime contest to NJIT on January 18. The Bulldogs led by as much as 18 before falling to the Highlanders in overtime. Bryant has struggled in conference play in their first season in America East but did get a victory over UNH earlier this season. Mariona Planes Fortuny averages 15.5 points per game to lead the team and the league. Fortuny also is shooting 50% from the field. The Bulldogs lead the league in scoring, averaging 65.6 points per game, and combined team rebounds, averaging 37.9 per game.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win would be a 15th win over Bryant in program history. A win would also be the first conference win of the season for the River Hawks.  
 
LEADING THE FLOCK
Ivory Finley leads the River Hawks averaging 9.1 points per game this season. The sophomore has scored a team-high 146 points through 16 games. Amaya Dowdy has been a force in the paint all season, totaling 29 blocks to lead the team and the conference, averaging 1.8 per game. Dowdy also is shooting 43% from the field to lead the River Hawks. Jaliena Sanchez has been the main distributor for UMass Lowell, dishing out 56 assists this year. Kaylen Banwareesingh has eclipsed 100 rebounds on the year, totaling 107 boards through 14 games to lead the team. Mili Carrera leads the team shooting 90% from the free throw line, knocking down 9 of 10 attempts.
 
 
WATCH THOSE HANDS
Through 16 games this season, UMass Lowell has tallied 115 steals. Jaliena Sanchez leads the team with 24 while Ivory Finley has tallied 21. Mili Carrera has 15 and Kaylen Banwareesingh, Amaya Dowdy, Ella Ner and Jaini Edmonds have tallied double digits steals. As a unit, UMass Lowell had a season-best 14 steals against Boston University.
 
CONFERENCE RANKS
The River Hawks rank second in the conference in blocks per game with 3.6 through sixteen games. Amaya Dowdy leads the league averaging 1.8 blocks per game. Ivory Finley sits fourth in the league in free throw percentage shooting 77% from the line. As a unit, UMass Lowell is second in the conference shooting 73% from the line. The team also is fourth in the league with 7.2 steals per game. 
 
FREE THROWS
UMass Lowell is 73% from the free throw line as a unit and second in the league. Jaliena Sanchez has made 42 of her 57 attempts and Ivory Finley is 41-53. Jaini Edmonds has been solid from the stripe at 19-23 and Amaya Dowdy is 27-39 this season.
