River Hawks Remain Undefeated in League Play with 5-1 Win at UNH

DURHAM, N.H. – Graduate student Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) registered a game- and season-high four points, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (7-2, 3-0 AE) topped New Hampshire (3-6, 0-2 AE), 5-1, on Sunday to remain undefeated in America East action so far this year.

With the decision, the River Hawks also extend their current win streak to six games.
"Our preparation in training over the week was the difference today," said Head Coach Shannon LeBlanc. "I want to commend the team and staff for preparing and executing our plan today. We played with purpose, executed set pieces, made good decisions and stayed disciplined with the ball. I am very happy for our team and staff today. This was a full team win."

Berger notched two goals in the contest to lead the River Hawk offense. Senior Kate Miller (Cherry Hill, N.J.), junior Mirthe Gans (Tiel, Netherlands) and sophomore Valerie Crory (Littleton, Mass.) each added one goal apiece, while freshman Meike Vischer (The Hague, Netherlands) chipped in with three assists and classmate Madison Leeper (East Amherst, N.Y.) tallied two. Junior Eleonore Boekhorst (Bilthoven, Netherlands) logged two saves in her seventh win of the season.

The River Hawks wasted no time crashing into their offensive zone, as Leeper collected a rebound and slipped a pass to Miller on the post for the first goal of the contest in the third minute of action.

The visitors kept the pressure on throughout the first quarter, eventually forcing four corners in a span of two minutes and converting on two of them. In the seventh minute, Vischer stickhandled past a pair of defenders before firing towards the cage where Berger would get the final touch. Then in the eighth minute, junior Alissia de Vries (The Hague, Netherlands) stopped the insert and pushed a ball to her left, setting up Gans' sweep that weaved its way through traffic and under the opposing keeper's pads.

Late in the first half, the River Hawks added another highlight reel tally, when the ball got lifted into the air and Leeper tipped it up over to Berger, who batted it into the cage to give UMass Lowell a 4-0 edge at the break.

Coming out of halftime, Boekhorst was tested for the first time, but her stop allowed the River Hawks to stretch the difference to 5-0 on a goal by Crory that slipped in between the Wildcat keeper's boot and the post.

Seconds later, UNH got on the board thanks to a dish from Tasmin Cookman to Ava Mariani. However, the score would remain unchanged in the fourth, as UMass Lowell took the 5-1 decision.

The River Hawks will now return home to host Maine on Friday, September 30 at 3 p.m. before embarking on a five-game road swing.
