River Hawks Ready for Matchup at Brown

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell men's soccer team (1-3-1, 0-0-0 AE) continues their road trip as they travel to Providence, R.I. to take on the Brown Bears (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Ivy) at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Wednesday, September 14, at 7 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks were tripped up by Merrimack, losing a 2-0 battle in North Andover. Junior Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia) played all 90 minutes while recording a shot on goal, and senior Alessandro Marongiu (Villa San Pietro, Italy) helped provide a spark off the bench, logging a shot on goal in only 10 minutes of action. In net, senior goalkeeper Jacob Heihsel played the entire game and made nine saves.
 
LEADING THE FLOCK
Sophomore Viljar Byrkjeland (Norheimsund, Norway) currently leads the River Hawks with eight points, including at least one point in four of the River Hawks' five games. His three goals also lead the team, while he is tied for first with two assists. Heihsel leads the team with 19 saves and 1.33 goals against average in three games, while junior keeper Loucas Costeas (Nicosia, Cyprus) has recorded 13 saves in two games.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT
The newest members of the program have already made a huge impact only a few games into the season. Six newcomers have started at least one game, while Byrkjeland and freshmen Daragh Reilly (Navan, Ireland) and Iñaki Esnaola (Junin, Argentina) have all tallied at least one point.
 
SCOUTING THE BEARS
The Bears welcome the River Hawks coming off a 1-0 victory over Providence College. Although midfielder Kyle Gee leads Brown with six shots and four on goal, it is midfielder Kojo Dadzie who leads the team with one goal and two points. In net, Connor Smith has played the entirety of both games, allowing only two goals on 24 shots faced, all while recording seven saves.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
Wednesday will be the fifth time these teams have matched up, with Brown claiming victor three times. In their most recent matchup, Brown took home a 1-0 victory in 2019.
