River Hawks Prepared for 2022 Season

2022 MEN'S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW

A new era of UMass Lowell men’s soccer is about to begin as the River Hawks take on their first season under new head coach Kyle Zenoni. With a new coaching staff and a new look roster, UMass Lowell is set to kick off the 2022 campaign on August 25 at home against St. Francis Brooklyn.

The River Hawks will have eight returning seniors including captain Matthias Stingl (Deggendorf, Germany) and starters Denis Petro (Michalovce, Slovakia), Borna Miklic (Kutina, Croatia), and Alessandro Marongiu (Villa San Pietro, Italy). With such a large group of veterans, the River Hawks will look to the senior class for leadership as they navigate throughout the ups and downs of the season.

After a freshman season that saw both players named to the America East All-Rookie Team, Kai McLoughlin (Dural, New South Wales) and Jonathan Ferreira (Ashland, Mass) will aim to continue to make an impact on the offensive end for UMass Lowell. McLoughlin finished last season tied for the team lead in points, while posting a hat trick against Hartford. Ferreira made 10 starts and finished fourth on the team in points with a career-high two assists against Hartford.

The River Hawks roster will welcome 11 newcomers, featuring seven freshmen and four transfers, including graduate student Javier Torres (Málaga, Spain) and sophomores Kacper Skonieczny (North Haven, Conn.), Love Lindborg (Stockholm, Sweden) and Viljar Byrkjeland (Norheimsund, Norway).  

 

“The new guys have done a really good job learning and adjusting to our style," said coach Zenoni. "They’ve created a lot of competition within the team. I think with that the team will get better as we go and the competition is what we needed.”

2022 Schedule

River Hawks open season at home before playing five of six games on the road

The River Hawks will open their season with a home match against St. Francis Brooklyn on August 25 before hitting the road for the first time to take on Siena on August 29. 

UMass Lowell’s September schedule features five non-conference games, starting at Rhode Island on September 2 and finishing with a road test against Massachusetts on September 20 before heading into conference play.

The River Hawks will return home for three games, opening America East Conference play against NJIT on September 24, followed by matchups with Vermont and Hartford. After a trip to UMBC, UMass Lowell will play its final non-conference game when the team welcomes Yale to town, before once again going on the road to play Binghamton. Rounding out the schedule, the River Hawks will take on Bryant and UAlbany at home before ending the regular season at New Hampshire on November 1. 

I think all the conference games will be fun match ups. I know, like with any conference, you’ve got to be at your best to win a game no matter what. I know our guys are up for the challenge and I know we will be working very hard. We will see how it plays out, but I know our guys are ready.
