River Hawks Drop Tightly Contested 13-12 Battle to UAlbany

LOWELL, Mass.—Despite a comeback effort led by hat tricks from juniors Brian Wiles (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Conor Foley (Walpole, Mass.), the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (1-8, 1-2 America East) came up short in a 13-12 heartbreaker against the University at Albany (3-5, 2-1 AE) Saturday night at Cushing Field.

Foley's four goals paced the River Hawks in the tightly contested battle. The multi-goal night also marked his eighth of the season and extended his current winning streak to 11 games. Wiles' four-point night earned him his first collegiate hat trick as well as a new career single-game best in points. Graduate student Domenic Giachello (Somers, Conn.) tacked on four points of his own for the River Hawks with yet another career milestone as he set his career single-game high with four assists.

Freshman Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.)) kept the firsts rolling in for UMass Lowell, adding two goals to pick up his first collegiate goal and multi-point game.

Between the pipes, sophomore Anthony Mancino (Holbrook, N.Y.) shut down 10 UAlbany shots to finish the night with a .435 save percentage.

"It was a good game. It was back-and-forth all game. I thought both teams played really hard. We had a good look there at the end as well," commented Head Coach Ed Stephenson. "I give credit to both teams. There were a lot of great plays in there throughout, but we came up one short. I was proud of our effort and the fight."

The Great Danes snagged a 1-0 lead early, but the River Hawks quickly retaliated. Sparked by a game-tying tally from Lawhorn, UMass Lowell added two more to the board to move out to a 3-1 lead with 10:49 left in the opening frame. Each team added two aside to close out the first, but the River Hawks managed to hold on to the 5-3 advantage.

UMass Lowell's offense continued to press ahead in the second as they outshot the Great Danes, 7-4. Stalwart defenses on both sides kept scoring low with just three total points across the 15-minute block. Foley struck first in the period off an impressive look from Giachello to hand the home squad the 6-3 lead with 11:45 left in the half. Two unanswered for UAlbany shot down UMass Lowell's comfortable lead and sent the River Hawks to the break with a slim 6-5 margin.

An unsteady third flipped the momentum in favor of the Great Danes. Tallies from graduate student Kyle Laforge (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Lawhorn kept the River Hawks in front, but a four-goal UAlbany run to close out the penultimate period pushed the visiting crew to a 10-8 lead.

Well-executed defense by Mancino in the final frame kept the Great Danes at bay as the River Hawks clawed back within one with 1:16 to go. The home team peppered the cage with goals as the seconds waned but could not find twine as the River Hawks suffered the 13-12 heartbreaker.

UMass Lowell continues its four-game homestand next Saturday, April 9, with a visit from Vermont. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
