ORONO, Maine – Contributions from each player in the lineup for the UMass Lowell softball team (20-12, 5-1 America East) helped the River Hawks to a 7-2 win at Maine (5-27, 1-4 America East) on Wednesday afternoon.
Every starter in the UMass Lowell batting order was able to get on base, collectively generating nine hits and drawing five walks. Highlighting the outing was Junior
Cayla Tulley (Corona, Calif.), who turned in a 2-for-3 performance, including her sixth home run of the season. She was able to tally four RBI in the afternoon showing, advancing her total to 25 this spring. Sophomore
Elizabeth Frederick (Sunapee, N.H.) also had a quality day with two hits, helping to drive in one score. Junior
Ryley White (Wareham, Mass.) continued to command the circle, striking out eight Black Bear hitters for her 14th win of the season.
Tulley opened the scoring right out of the gate by sending an RBI double into the right field corner, however, the Black Bears leveled the score, 1-1, following a pair of River Hawk miscues.
In the top of the third, Tulley came up big for the squad once more. With two runners on, Tulley hit one opposite field again, this time clearing the fence for a three-run homer to take back the lead, 4-1.
The middle innings would prove just as effective for the River Hawks. Frederick strengthened the UMass Lowell advantage to 5-1 by slugging an RBI double into left center field in the fourth frame.
Helping the offense further, a fielder's choice chance put in play by
Morgan Fisher (Glassboro, N.J.) brought across
Ashley Soares (Acushnet, Mass.) in the top of the fifth. In the home team's turn at the dish, White struck out the side to bring her total to six.
The River Hawks earned some insurance in the final inning with an RBI single hit straight up the middle by
Lea White (Meriden, Conn.). While the Black Bears scratched across one final run, UMass Lowell closed the door on a comeback, 7-2.
With heavy rain arriving in Orono upon the game's completion, the second end of the twin bill has been rescheduled to be a hosted by UMass Lowell. The River Hawks will now play a doubleheader against Maine on April 27 at River View Field.
Before then, the team will have a week break ahead of a trip to Amherst to play non-conference rival Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
