River Hawks Bested by BU in Midweek Doubleheader

Story Links

BOSTON, Mass. – The UMass Lowell softball team (12-10) made the short trip to Beantown to take on the Boston University Terriers for a midweek doubleheader, resulting in two losses for the River Hawks.

The squad were bested 3-2 to open the afternoon, followed by a 7-1 shortcoming to close out the twin bill.

Graduate student Olivia Labbe (Rochester, Mass.) recorded the first triple of the season for the River Hawks, which helped to knock in one of UMass Lowell's game one tallies. Sophomore Becca Vaillancourt (Tiverton, R.I.) turned in another consistent performance at the dish, batting 2-for-3 in game two. Despite earning her second loss of the season, junior Ryley White (Wareham, Mass.) struck out five hitters in the first tilt of the afternoon.

Boston was the first to jump on the board out the gate in game one, but an infield single by graduate student Maria Moccio (Feeding Hills, Mass.) forced a throwing error which allowed sophomore Morgan Fisher (Glassboro, N.J.) to come home safely and even the score, 1-1.

In the third inning, the Terriers took advantage with runners in scoring position and a single to center was enough to grab the lead once more.

Labbe retaliated on her RBI triple to bring UMass Lowell within one run in the fifth frame. The River Hawks attempted to knot things up with her on third base, but a fielder's choice retired Labbe at home.

While the defense held in the final innings, the visitor bats were unable to come alive to level the score and UMass Lowell came up short, 3-2.

Boston capitalized on early opportunities in game two to jump out to a three-run advantage with a solo home run and two RBI double in their first plate appearances.

The River Hawks had success making contact with the ball but couldn't avoid hitting into the Terrier defense. They pressured in the fourth frame by getting two runners aboard thanks to singles by junior Cayla Tulley (Corona, Calif.) and Fisher, yet nothing would come of the efforts.

By the sixth inning, the opposition had extended their lead to 7-0. UMass Lowell caught a break following an error by the Boston first baseman, green lighting senior Tori Mueller (Clovis, Calif.) to cross the plate and get the River Hawks on the board.

The Terriers closed out the final attempts to generate momentum and sealed the win, 7-1.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Saturday, March 26, with a trip to Fairfield, Connecticut, to take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
