River Hawks Tripped Up by Sacred Heart, 14-10

LOWELL, Mass. – Despite a career day for sophomore Jake Davis (Franklin, Mass.), the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-5) lost a tight 14-10 battle to Sacred Heart (2-3) Saturday at Cushing Field.

"We did a really nice job of following the ball, moving the ball," said Head Coach Ed Stephenson. "When we do that, we can be potent on offense, and Jake certainly capitalized on a few of those today."

Adding to his career-best four goals, Davis notched an assist to end the night with a career-high five points. Backing up Davis' scoring run, graduate student Kyle Laforge (Tyngsboro, Mass.) put in two goals along with an assist, and senior Liam McDonough (Groton, Mass.) tallied his first two goals of the season. Juniors Conor Foley (Walpole, Mass.) and Brian Wiles (Longmeadow, Mass.) rounded out the River Hawks' scoresheet with a goal apiece.

McDonough had another outstanding performance at the X, finishing 15-for-22. Freshman Calvin Desmarais (Dracut, Mass.) stopped seven shots from the visitors, and sophomore Anthony Mancino (Holybrook, N.Y.) stuffed four in his third start of the season.

"It was a tough game to play today, and I thought we did a really good job in the first half," said Stephenson. "We put up eight in the first half, faceoffs were really really solid, and we scored two off the faceoff."

The game started as a shootout on both ends of the field. Sacred Heart scored the first goal of the game before Davis retaliated with a shot off a Pioneer turnover. The away team answered back with a goal of their own, but McDonough put the River Hawks in front, 3-2, with back-to-back unassisted goals straight off the faceoff.

Just minutes later, Davis and Foley netted another pair of goals for the River Hawks to push the home squad out to a 5-3 advantage. Clawing their way back, Sacred Heart crept back in with two of their own to lock both squads up at the end of the first.

The second quarter marked a tight battle between the two squads as they fought for the lead. Laforge scored early after a missed shot from Foley, but the Pioneers went on a small run to extend their lead to 9-6. A pair of goals from Davis gave him his 10th and 11th on the season and kept the River Hawks within striking distance, heading to the break down 9-8.

Four unanswered goals from the Pioneers pushed them out to a 13-8 lead at the start of the second half. A goal from Wiles stopped the bleeding momentarily, but Sacred Heart put back another to extend their lead to five.

The River Hawks kept the game close in the early stages of the final 15 minutes as Laforge was able to score his second goal off an extra-man opportunity. A strong defensive stand from Sacred Heart held the score at 14-10, however, dealing the River Hawks the loss at home.

UMass Lowell opens conference action on the road next week, taking a trip to Stony Brook for a midweek clash on Wednesday, March 16, at 4 p.m.
