AMESBURY, Mass.—The UMass Lowell men's hockey team continues to rack up the postseason awards as a trio of River Hawks earned Hockey East All-Star Team selections, as announced by the conference Friday.
Senior
Owen Savory (Cambridge, Ontario) was tabbed to the Second Team All-Star squad while juniors
Andre Lee (Karlstad, Sweden) and
Carl Berglund (Hammaro, Sweden) earned Third Team nods.
Savory's standout goaltending has carried the River Hawks to a 20-9-3 (15-8-1 Hockey East) mark to cap the 2021-22 regular-season run. His .928 save percentage and 1.84 GAA ranks him second in Hockey East in both categories. Savory's impressive stat line also places him amongst the top 10 goaltenders in the national standings. A two-time Stop It Goaltender of the Month and three-time Hockey East Goaltender of the Week, the senior capped his time at UMass Lowell by registering his 10th career shutout, his fifth of the season, to push the River Hawks to the coveted 20-win threshold.
"Owen had a tremendous regular season. He seemed to come up with spectacular saves on a weekly basis. He was not only timely but also very consistent throughout the season," remarked Head Coach
Norm Bazin.
Most recently, Savory was also named a semifinalist for the 2022 Mike Richter Award, given annually to the nation's top goaltender in NCAA Division I men's hockey.
"He's developing into quite a leader and has managed his heavy workload very well. We will look for him to continue to be impactful as we make a postseason push," said Bazin.
Lee and Berglund's on-ice chemistry has made a key difference in UMass Lowell's offensive output. The pair of forwards put up a team and career-high 26 points each this year.
A catalyst on the attack, Lee's goal-scoring prowess put him at the top of the River Hawks' stat line at the end of the season with a career-best 16 goals. A pivotal player in key goal-scoring situations, Lee net a team-high four game-winning tallies and six opening shots this year. A heavy hitter and playmaker on both sides of the ice, Lee ranked second in blocked shots amongst all UMass Lowell forwards with 21.
"Andre has started to find his scoring niche in college. This year, he has started to break out offensively and we feel good about his chances to have a similar impact in the playoffs," commented Bazin. "He's such a competitor that he will find ways to keep improving on this season. We are very happy that Andre was recognized by the other league coaches as an All-Star."
With a career-high in both points and assists (19), Berglund's playmaking ability has been a major asset for the River Hawks this season. Amassing a +10 rating this season, his hockey expertise has made for some critical goals from the forward including four power play notches and a pair of game-winning goals.
"Carl was really effective this year. He has elite hockey sense and he continues to make key offensive contributions on a consistent basis. He is a worthy league all-star and we think the world of him as a coaching staff," said Bazin.
