BOSTON, Mass. – Successes in indoor competition continued once again this weekend for the UMass Lowell men's track and field team, as they took part in the Scarlet and White Invite hosted by Boston University.

The River Hawks tallied points in six events over the course of the contest, highlighted by personal bests from several athletes.

Vaulting to a sixth-place finish, senior Elie Kalambayi (Lynn, Mass.) set a personal best of 6.56 meters in long jump. Also leaping into the sand pit, Evans Oduro (Kumasi, Ghana) took on the triple jump event. The junior jumper covered 13.75 meters, good for sixth place among all competitors.

Rounding out field competition, graduate student Patrick Pang (Peabody, Mass.) represented the River Hawk throwing contingent in the weight throw. Launching the rock 17.38 meters, Pang picked up a fifth place to close out the day for the UMass Lowell fielders.

On the course, graduate student Daniel Cosgrove (Boxford, Mass.) returned after a cold rest to set a personal best in the 1000 meter race. His impressive 2:25.28 time slotted him onto the podium in third place.

In the mile run, an incredible effort by graduate student Derek Holmes (Marshfield, Mass.) enabled him to come close to the coveted four-minute mark. Despite coming up just shy, his time of 4:01.24 earned him a sixth place finish in the highly-contested event.

"He'll get there soon enough," said Gardner. "It was a great effort on his part."

Turning in another notable performance for the River Hawks running crew, graduate student Noah Bellomo (Hudson, N.H.) set a personal best in the 800-meter race by crossing the line in 1:51.69.

"He had a great rescue for the second straight week, this time earning his personal best. It's awesome that we're beginning to see him come around," commented Gardner.

The River Hawks return to Boston University next weekend, February 11-12, when they partake in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
