2022 Softball Season Preview

SB season recap

The UMass Lowell softball team will look to find success in 2022 through the many fresh faces around the diamond who are eager to make a statement in the spring season.

After completing 15 seasons and becoming the all-time winningest coach at the University of New Haven, Jen Starek will begin her first campaign as head coach of the River Hawks this spring. UMass Lowell kicks things off February 11-13 when they journey south to play in the Tiger Invitational at Auburn.

I'm really excited to be a part of the River Hawk family. The chemistry between the staff is really good because we're all on the same page and we have great ideas that we can bounce off each other. I think that's made the transition really easy because the student-athletes can see that all the pieces fit together really well. One of the best things about getting here is the athletes being so open to ideas and the excitement of what we want to do and the culture we're building.
Head Coach Jen Starek

After placing fourth in the America East with a 9-7 conference record (13-18 overall) in 2021, the River Hawks will aim to maneuver their personnel as they find their identity.

The squad graduated the bulk of their starting lineup from a season ago. Among those 2021 seniors was Courtney Cashman, who rewrote the UMass Lowell record books during her career, and led the America East in slugging percentage (.788) and on-base percentage (.509) in her final season.

As a result, many players on this year's roster will have their first chance to make an impression and earn their spot in the field. While the big bats relied upon last season may no longer be on the roster, Starek is optimistic about another part of the game - that is, the pitching.

Returning to the rotation are Ryley White, Chelsea Runyon, and Kaylie See. White, who finished with an 8-3 record, was among the conference's most effective pitchers last season, ranking third in ERA (1.84) and fourth in total strikeouts (85).

“Those players are going to add a lot of depth for us,” Starek said. “They bring a lot of knowledge and experience to our rotation. We also add two freshmen, Jen [Slanovec] and Ella [Harris], who will really build on it. It'll be great to have them give teams a fresh look, as well.”

Key veterans returning to the lineup will be Tori Mueller, Maria Moccio and Olivia Labbe.

Mueller, a senior utility player, ranked fifth on the River Hawks last season in batting average (.253) and scored 17 runs, drove in two RBI and only struck out four times. She appeared in 26 games with 24 starts, and was safe on all three of her stolen base attempts. As a fielder, Starek noted Mueller's ability to be versatile and how comfortable she is with moving around the field and playing different positions.

Moccio, now a graduate student, started all 31 games for UMass Lowell and was an effective first baseman. She tallied 20 hits, 11 RBI and drew nine walks. Starek will look for Moccio to be an effective weapon in the batters box this season, as well as a trusted fielder on defense.

Labbe, also a grad student, started 30 games for the River Hawks in 2021 and finished the season with a .333 on-base percentage. Discipline at the plate led to 12 walks, while she also boasted two home runs, a career best for her. Additionally, her abilities as a fielder were displayed throughout the campaign, as she finished with 47 putouts, 5 assists and a .958 fielding percentage.

“They're going to be the anchors,” Starek said. “They know exactly what the conference and schedule looks like. They've been awesome leaders with some of the younger kids by helping them adjust to what we've had going on. But we also have players who've been in and out of the lineup in the past, so they're hungry to solidify some of those positions, which has made for healthy competition.”

Two players that are expected to make contributions on the field this season are junior Brenna Davenport and sophomore Lea White. While they weren't consistent faces in the lineup throughout the 2021 campaign, they demonstrated their abilities in the infield by finishing plays and getting outs.

Davenport tallied 11 putouts and seven assists in her 16 appearances, while White maintained a .933 fielding percentage and nine putouts in 19 appearances. Expectations are that the duo will cover the gaps with efficiency and minimize ground balls from getting through to the outfield.

The River Hawks lead off their season with three tournaments where they will be tested with tough competition. Their trip to compete in the Tiger Invitational hosted by Auburn will include one matchup against the host, as well as a pair of games against both Seton Hall and St. John's.

Following the tournament, they head to Elon University and Norfolk State for their respected invitationals, where other opponents include Providence, Morgan State and Drexel.

“I think we're going to be challenged early in our schedule, but then have some games that will play similar to America East," Starek said. “It'll be a nice balance of games that will enable us to see success hopefully early on and others that will showcase levels we strive to be at. Hopefully, as we gain experience through those more difficult games, the more likely we'll be able to handle those pressures and successes as we get into America East play.”

Becoming a cohesive unit as quickly as possible will be of critical importance for the River Hawks. Most players taking the field at the start of the season will have had limited experience playing together during games. Additionally, Starek is implementing new defensive strategy that the team has been practicing in preparation for the season. Shifting players to different positions and educating them on new alignments and setups is key to establishing themselves and finding a comfortable system. The hope is that by the time America East play begins in April, UMass Lowell will have found its gear and be able to coast through the conference schedule with few bumps in the road.

“We want to make sure we're competitive every single game,” Starek said. “We need to focus on doing the right things including the small details to make sure we're putting ourselves in a good spot. If we have a competitive attitude and do the routine things, we really should be hitting our peak.”

The bar is being set high for the River Hawks this season. Time will tell if they're able to soar over it.
