River Hawks Fall to Vermont 64-44 on Saturday Night

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball (10-15, 7-9 AE) fell to the Vermont Catamounts (19-10, 13-5 AE) by a score of 64-44 on Saturday night at Tsongas Center.
Senior Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) was honored prior to opening tip, celebrating her senior night before 1,556 fans at Tsongas. The senior finished with six points on the night and added five assists and one steal. Junior Shamyjha Price (Pittsburgh, Penn.) led the team with 10 points and added two steals.
Vermont's Emma Utterback led all scorers with 25 points on the night.
The Catamounts opened the game on a 9-0 run, before sophomore Leilani Rodriguez (Worcester, Mass.) scored to get the River Hawks on the board. UMass Lowell trailed 9-2 at the media break of the first quarter. The River Hawks did battle back and cut the lead to 13-8 at the end of the first.
UMass Lowell picked up the intensity in the second quarter. A block by freshman Amaya Dowdy (Woonsocket, R.I.) provided a spark as the River Hawks went on a 10-2 run over 3:08 to cut lead to 22-18. The Catamounts then held UMass Lowell scoreless for 1:41 and pushed lead to 26-18. At the half, the River Hawks trailed 26-22.
Another slow start for the River Hawks allowed the Catamounts to push the lead to 32-22. Sophomore Baylee Teal (Penfield, N.Y) knocked down a three to spark some life in UMass Lowell. However, unforced turnovers gave Vermont a chance to extend the lead to nine. The Catamounts led 49-36 at the end of the third.
River Hawks could not get back into the game and struggled from the field. Vermont took advantage and extended the lead. The Catamounts would go on to win 64-44.
UMass Lowell finishes the regular season on Monday, February 28 when they host the Hartford Hawks. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center.
