Juniors Nick Marola (Scotia, N.Y.), Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.), and Brian Gaughan (Walpole, Mass.)  bring plenty of experience on the diamond and are primed to guide the class of newcomers this spring. The River Hawks welcome 20 new members to the team, including fourteen freshman and six transfers, including Virginia Tech transfer sophomore Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) and junior Trey Brown (Rochester, N.Y.).

I think the guys understand what we expect, and they’ve set the standard very high for themselves. Our leadership core has done a really great job of teaching the new guys what we are all about here. These guys know what It takes to win is this league and they know the sacrifice it takes to succeed. Without these guys, this program wouldn’t be where it is this spring.

Nick Barese joins the team as an assistant coach after spending the last seven years at the helm of the Merrimack College baseball program. Barese brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to support Harring and former player and now assistant coach Joe Consolmagno.

Brent Edmunds also joins the coaching staff as a volunteer coach. Edmunds’ experience as a pitching coach at Saint Anslem College is sure to prove beneficial to the UMass Lowell pitching core.

It’s nice to have a full fall to get to know the new guys and have a full unit for the spring. Any of the guys on this team can play, the competition is great. We have a ‘next man up’ mentality and we trust every guy on the roster. America East Championship is always the goal. We have to stay locked in and do our job to give ourselves a chance to win a championship.

It’s always a battle in this league. I think we’re going to be a different team this year. In conference play, teams tend to get to know each other. But what I love about this team is that nobody knows who we are. We don’t care about preseason polls and rankings. We know what we have and we’re ready to get going.
