River Hawks Face 62-48 Setback at Fairleigh Dickinson

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (0-7, 0-0 AE) fell to the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (7-2, 0-0 NEC) on Saturday afternoon at Stratis Arena.
Graduate student Mili Carrera (Lima, Peru) and junior Jaini Edmonds (Worcester, Mass.) each scored 13 points to lead the team. Carrera went 3-3 from behind the arc while Edmonds added three rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Amaya Dowdy (Woonsocket, R.I.) had a game-high five blocks on the afternoon.
The Knights led 8-6 at the media break, shooting 40% in the opening minutes. UMass Lowell's offense was more efficient in the early going, shooting 3-7 to begin the game. The River Hawks turned the ball over five times and went 4-12 from the field. Sierra DeAngelo had six points for Fairleigh Dickinson in the opening 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Jaini Edmonds drained a three to cut the deficit to four, the first made three of the afternoon for either side. The River Hawks took their first lead of the game out of the media timeout after Mili Carrera knocked down a mid-range jumper to put the visitors in front 23-21. Back-to-back scores from junior Sydney Coombs (Newmarket, N.H) and senior Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) opened a UMass Lowell lead before Mili Carrera knocked down a triple with seconds remaining, giving the River Hawks a 32-27 advantage at the half.
UMass Lowell shot 37% from the field in the first half and turned the ball over seven times. The Knights had nine turnovers and shot just under 40% at the halftime break.
Out of the break, the River Hawks extended the lead to seven after Mili Carrera's third triple of the afternoon. Both sides struggled to make shots, but the Knights found life and cut the lead to three with just over three minutes left. UMass Lowell struggled from the field in the third, shooting 23% with three made shots. Fairleigh Dickinson battled to take a 40-39 lead at the end of the third.
Jaini Edmonds' three pointer opened the fourth quarter and put UMass Lowell back in front early. However, the Knights were powered by seven fourth quarter points from Dahomee Forgues and took a 47-42 lead, forcing a timeout from UMass Lowell. Fairleigh Dickinson stretched the lead to double digits at the media break. The hosts held on to win the game 62-48.
The River Hawks return home on Wednesday, December 7 to host Central Connecticut State. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center.
