River Hawks Close Non-Con Slate at Towson

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (1-8, 0-0 AE) will wrap up the non-conference schedule with an afternoon matchup with the Towson Tigers (5-5, 0-0 CAA) on Friday. Tip-off is slated for 12:00pm at the SECU Arena in Towson, Maryland.

LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks went 1-1 in their last week of action, picking up a first win of the season against Central Connecticut before falling to Holy Cross at the weekend. Itís been a tough start to the season for the River Hawks, facing many strong opponents in the non-conference schedule. Ivory Finley scored 17 and added nine boards, three steals and two assists in the loss to Holy Cross. Amaya Dowdy went 7-8 from the field for 14 points and added three rebounds and one block. Kaylen Banwareesingh also hit double-digits, scoring 10 and grabbing six rebounds.
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Towson welcomes UMass Lowell after falling to Memphis, 73-71, last time out. The Tigers have lost three of their last four games, with the lone win coming against Howard. With a 1-3 record at home, Towson has struggled on their home court in the non-conference slate, losing three straight games at SECU Arena. Kylie Komegay-Lucas leads the team in scoring with 16.2 points per game and has tallied 6.2 rebounds per game. She also leads the team with 15 blocks in 10 games. The Tigers have plenty of size and ability on the glass as Quinzia Fulmore and Anissa Rivera are averaging 6.4 and 6.0 rebounds per game as well, respectively.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win would be a second win in three games for UMass Lowell. A win would also be the first win over Towson in program history.
 
LEADING THE FLOCK
Kaylen Banwareesingh leads the team averaging 9.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. The senior is shooting 38% from the field to lead the River Hawks. Jaini Edmonds shooting 34% from the field and 39% from behind the arc. Edmondsí 13 made threes is also a team high. Ivory Finley and Jaliena Sanchez lead the team with 16 and 14 steals this season, respectively. Amaya Dowdy has totaled 13 blocks to lead the team, including five againt Fairleigh Dickinson.
 
WATCH THOSE HANDS
Through eight games this season, UMass Lowell has tallied 75 steals. Ivory Finley and Jaliena Sanchez lead the team with 16 and 14, respectively, while Mili Carrera and Ella Ner have ten each. As a unit, UMass Lowell had a season-best 14 steals against Boston University.
 
FROM THE FIELD
The River Hawks are shooting 36% from the field this season, with 163 made field goals on 458 attempts. UMass Lowell has faced tough defenses in the non-conference, but the team will look to improve going into the final game of the slate. Kaylen Banwareesingh is shooting a team-high 39% from the field. Jaini Edmonds is shooting 34% this season with a team-high 13 made 3FGs and 39% shooting from distance.
 
FREE THROWS
UMass Lowell is 72% from the free throw line as a unit and second in the league, knocking down 102 of 141 attempts. Jaliena Sanchez has made 27 of her 35 attempts and Ivory Finley is 20-26. Jaini Edmonds is perfect from the stripe at 11-11 and Kaylen Banwareesingh is 12-17 this season.
 
LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Kaylen Banwareesingh has taken on a bigger leadership role this season and the senior is putting up numbers so far. The Bronx native is averaging a double-double to start the year and has been the River Hawks' best threat on the offensive end. Coach King has been impressed with Banwareesingh's effort and scoring and will look to the veteran to continue to lead the team throughout the season.
