River Hawks Take on Harvard in Midweek Matchup

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (0-5, 0-0 AE) returns to action after the holiday to take on the Harvard Crimson (3-4, 0-0 IVY) on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Lavietes Pavilion in Cambridge.

LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks have started the season 0-5 with an 0-3 record at home and 0-2 on the road. UMass Lowell fell to Massachusetts 71-53 last time out. Amaya Dowdy scored a career-high 18 points and 10 points to record her second career double-double. Jaliena Sanchez added 10 points and six assists while Jaini Edmonds scored eight points and grabbed five boards.
 
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard holds a 3-4 record to start the season. The Crimson are on a three-game losing skid, after going winless in the Cancun Challenge against Purdue, Oklahoma State and Florida State. Harvard has beaten Rhode Island, Boston College and Merrimack this season. Harmoni Turner leads the team averaging 17.9 points per game and has team-highs 32 assists and 16 steals this season. Gabby Anderson leads the Crimson with 43 rebounds on the year, averaging 6.1 per game and 5.0 points per game. As a unit, Harvard is shooting 41% from the field and 34% from behind the arc through seven games.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win would be a first win over Harvard in program history. A win would also be the first win of the season for the River Hawks.
 
LEADING THE FLOCK
Kaylen Banwareesingh leads the team averaging 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. The senior is shooting 36% from the field to lead the River Hawks. Ivory Finley is shooting 27% from the field and is averaging 7.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Jaliena Sanchez has a team-high 10 steals and 22 assists this season while averaging 8.6 points and 2.8 rebounds through five games. Amaya Dowdy has each tallied five blocks to lead the team.
 
WATCH THOSE HANDS
Through five games this season, UMass Lowell has tallied 48 steals. Jaliena Sanchez leads the team with 10 on the year while Ivory Finely and Kaylen Banwareesingh have eight and seven steals, respectively. As a unit, UMass Lowell had a season-best 14 steals against Boston University.
 
FROM THE FIELD
The River Hawks are shooting 33% from the field this season, with 83 made field goals on 255 attempts. UMass Lowell has faced tough defenses, but the team will look to improve going forward.  Kaylen Banwareesingh is shooting a team-high 36% from the field. Ivory Finley is 27% and Jaini Edmonds is shooting 28% this season.
 
FREE THROWS
UMass Lowell is 75% from the free throw line as a unit through five games this season, knocking down 57 of 76 attempts. Jaliena Sanchez has made 18 of her 22 attempts and Ivory Finley is 12-15. Sydney Coombs is 7-10 and Ella Ner is 5-8 from the stripe.
 
LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Kaylen Banwareesingh has taken on a bigger leadership role this season and the senior is putting up numbers so far. The Bronx native is averaging a double-double to start the year and has been the River Hawksí best threat on the offensive end. Coach King has been impressed with Banwareesinghís effort and scoring and will look to the veteran to continue to lead the team throughout the season.
