PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The UMass Lowell men's basketball team (4-1) will take a quick trip down to Providence to take on Brown (1-3) on Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday.
A WIN WOULD
A win against the Bears would move the River Hawks to 2-5 in the all-time series. It would also improve UMass Lowell's record to 2-1 on the road this year and boost the team's overall record to 5-1 for just the second time in the program's Division I history.
LEADING THE FLOCK
Six River Hawks are averaging double-digit scoring, as Abdoul Karim Coulibaly leads the way with 15.5 points per game, in addition to adding a team-best 9.5 rebounds per game. Right behind him, Ayinde Hikim is averaging 11.8 points with 4.8 assists. Rounding out the double-digit scorers are Everette Hammond with 11.2, Yuri Covington with 10.2, and
Allin Blunt and Cam Morris III with 10 points each.
LAST TIME OUT
Max Brooks recorded a game-high 18 points en route to his second double-double of the season. Six River Hawks tallied double-digit scoring, as they took down the Emerson Lions, 105-53. Leading by five only minutes into the second half, UMass Lowell went on a 24-0 run to blow open the game, capped off by back-to-back threes from Mikey Watkins and a third from Quinton Mincey. From there, the River Hawks did not look back, as they scored 34 of the game's final 45 points to take home the 52-point victory.
1000 POINT CLUB
By converting on back-to-back three pointers in the second half against Emerson, graduate student Mikey Watkins joined the coveted 1000 point scoring club after entering the contest with 966 points.
HIGH SCORING AFFAIRS
So far this season, the River Hawks have scored at least 89 points in all but one of their games. The team is averaging 91.4 points per game to rank 12th in the nation.
SHARP SHOOTERS
The River Hawks, who shot a season-high 63.5% from the field in the win against Emerson, have surpassed 50% shooting in four out of five games. The team is averaging 52.9% so far to rank 11th in the nation.
RAMPING UP
In each of their first five games, the River Hawks have outscored their opponents in the second half, including posting a 59-18 advantage against Fisher in the season opener. In total, UMass Lowell is besting their opponents, 267-154, in the closing half.
FROM DOWNTOWN
After having a tough year beyond the arc last season and only shooting 30% on 3FGs, the River Hawks have been strong with the long ball so far this year. The team is currently shooting 41% from long range, including at least eight threes in four of their five contests.
HELPING HANDS
With his 11 assists against Sacred Heart, Ayinde Hikim set a new Division I program record after
Ryan Jones first logged 10 in 2018 vs. NJIT.
DOUBLING UP
At least one River Hawk has logged a double-double in each of the team's games so far. First, Abdoul Karim Coulibaly logged his first two collegiate double-doubles in as many games to begin his career with the River Hawks against Fisher and Columbia. Max Brooks has added two double-doubles, at Rutgers and against Emerson, while Ayinde Hikim posted his first against Sacred Heart.
BIG MAN, BIG NUMBERS
With his performances against Fisher and Columbia, Abdoul Karim Coulibaly became the first River Hawk to record consecutive double-doubles since 2019 (
Christian Lutete, 2/5/19-2/13/19, 3). He now sits 15th in the nation in double-doubles (2).
DEFENSE WINS GAMES
Coach Duquette has made defense a huge point of emphasis for his program again this year. The team is currently 17th in the nation for field goal percentage defense and fifth in total rebounds. Abdoul Karim Coulibaly ranks fifth in the country individually in offensive rebounds (19).
SHARING IS CARING
The River Hawks have boasted at least eight scorers in each of their first four games, including 11 against Emerson. In the contests against Fisher and Emerson, the team totaled six, double-digit scorers for the first time since 2017-18 (at Maine, 1/31/18).
