River Hawks Tripped Up by Brown 67-56

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (0-4, 0-0 AE) fell to the Brown Bears (3-2, 0-0 IVY) 67-56 on Saturday afternoon at the Costello Athletic Center.

Senior Kaylen Banwareesingh (Bronx, N.Y.) led the all scorers with a career-high 31 points and added 14 boards for her fourth career double-double. Sophomore Ivory Finley (Minneapolis, Minn.) hit double digit points as well, scoring 12 points. Senior Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) set a career-high with eight assists on the afternoon.

With 31 points Saturday, Kaylen Banwareesingh is now tied for second for points in a game in the D1 era. The senior shares the spot with Shannon Samuels, who reached that mark twice in her career. Jaliena Sanchez moved herself into the top 10 assists in a game category, recording eight against Brown to sit tied for sixth in the D1 era.

"Credit to Brown coming out in the second half and being ready to play," said head coach Denise King. "We are making a lot of unforced turnovers right now and we just have to keep plugging away. It's a long season, so hopefully we can turn things around."

The River Hawks opened the game with a 6-0 run, jumping on Brown early. Neither side took care of the ball in the opening minutes, with each team turning the ball over more than once. Each team would accumulate seven turnovers after the first. UMass Lowell's defensive pressure forced tough shots from the visitors' and the River Hawks took a 16- lead after one. Banwareesingh led the way with 10 points, five rebounds and one steal in the first quarter while the River Hawks shot 40% from the field.

In the second quarter, the River Hawks continued to play well on the defensive end, forcing turnovers and keeping Brown off the board for over two minutes. UMass Lowell shot 40% again in the second and the Bears shot just under 39% from the field. The hosts took a 29-20 lead into the halftime break.

Out of the halftime break, Brown's offense went on a 19-0 run to take the lead less than halfway into the quarter. UMass Lowell struggled to get their offense in rhythm and the Bears' defense began forcing turnovers in quick succession. The River Hawks turned the ball over 14 times in the third and trailed 56-41 heading into the final 10 minutes.

UMass Lowell battled in the fourth and cut the lead behind made free throws but could not make up the ground. The deficit was cut to nine with just over three and a half minutes to play, but turnovers proved costly, and Brown held on to win the game 67-56 for their third victory of the year.

The home stand will conclude as the River Hawks host Massachusetts on Tuesday, November 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center.
