River Hawks Set to Host Brown on Saturday Afternoon

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (0-3, 0-0 AE) continues the home stand as the Brown Bears (2-2, 0-0 IVY) come to Lowell for a Saturday afternoon game. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center.

LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks have started the season 0-3. Last time out, UMass Lowell dropped its home opener against Boston University 63-43 on Wednesday night. Kaylen Banwareesingh led the team with 14 points on 6-15 shooting and added a team-high nine rebounds. Ivory Finley added 10 points and six boards. UMass Lowell struggled from the field, shooting 24% and 16% from distance. The River Hawks had a season-low 17 turnovers and forced BU into 24 turnovers. As a unit, UMass Lowell also tallied a season-high 14 steals, with Ivory Finley leading the way with five. 
 
SCOUTING THE BEARS
Brown dropped its opening two contests against Fairfield and Duquesne but has since won back-to-back games against Wagner and Sacred Heart for a 2-2 overall record. Through four games, Kyla Jones has averaged 21.5 points to lead the team. She also leads the team with eight steals. Isabella Mauricio is also averaging double-digit points at 12.8 points per game. Mya Murray has a team-best nine blocks in four appearances.
 
A WIN WOULD
A win would be a first win over Brown. A win would also be the first win of the season for the River Hawks.
 
LEADING THE FLOCK
Jaliena Sanchez leads the team averaging 9.0 points per game and has eight assists on the year. Kaylen Banwareesingh is averaging a team-high 8.7 rebounds through three games, collecting 26 total boards. Ivory Finley and Mili Carrera have each tallied five steals to lead the team. Banwareesingh is shooting a team-high 33% on 9-27 shooting to start the season.
 
NEW TO THE NEST
The River Hawks welcome two newcomers to the 2022-23 roster. Graduate student Mili Carrera joins the team after four years at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma where she scored 1,229 points in her career. Freshman Ella Ner enters her first season with UMass Lowell after playing with the Israel National Team throughout her high school career. Carrera and Ner bring a new dynamic to the River Hawks on both ends of the floor.
 
COACHING STAFF COMPLETE
Denise King completed her coaching staff prior to the start of the new season. John Owens joins the staff as an assistant coach, working primarily with the guards on both ends of the floor. Marcus Young was named the director of basketball operations over the summer. King now has a full staff ready for the new campaign ahead.
 
SENIOR CLASS
Head Coach Denise King has worked with this talented senior class for the entirety of their collegiate career. The class is a crucial part of the program. Jaliena Sanchez and Kaylen Banwareesingh return to the Rive Hawk roster and will once again be looked upon to lead the team this season.
 
PRESEASON CONFERENCE RANKS
UMass Lowell was picked to finish sixth in the America East Conference in the leagueís preseason poll, receiving 27 points. UAlbany received 59 points and seven first-place votes, earning the top spot in the poll. Maine, Vermont, NJIT and Binghamton sit in spots two through five. New Hampshire and Byrant tied for seventh and UMBC was picked ninth.
