River Hawks Claim Third at Beantown Challenge; Stelmach Places Third in Heptathlon

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—
Taking to the track for the first time in 2022, the UMass Lowell men's track and field team clinched a third-place finish at the Beantown Challenge hosted by Harvard on Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Indoor Track. Additionally, freshman multi-event competitor Luke Stelmach (Sterling, Mass.) earned bronze after two days of tough competition in the Harvard Multi men's heptathlon.
 
Sweeping the event on both for the men and women, Connecticut took the top spot for with 201 points. In a tight battle for the top three, the host Crimson narrowly edged out the River Hawks for second with 79 points to UMass Lowell's final tally of 78.
 
"We were really pleased with our return to competition after a month off," remarked Head Coach Gary Gardner. "We had a bunch of PRs, which is a great way to start the year."
 
The River Hawks opened the day in the field, kicking off the action with the shot put and weight throw. The throwing duo of seniors Hayden Dillow (Franklin, Mass.) and Sean Trott (Lowell, Mass.) brought in a combined eight points with fourth and sixth-place finishes in the shot put, respectively. Dillow tossed to a final mark of 14.49-meters (47'6.5"), while Trott hit 13.99-meters (45'10.75").
 
Sophomore Maxwell Davis (Stoneham, Mass.) rounded out scoring in the field for UMass Lowell, clearing a height of 4.37-meters (14'4") to claim third in the event and bring in six points.
 
Leading off the River Hawks' running contingent, senior Joseph Young (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had an impressive outing in the sprints, earning fifth in the 60-meter dash and second in the 200-meter for 12 points. Young's 7.05 time in the dash also marked a personal best for the sprinter.
 
Continuing UMass Lowell's success in the sprints, senior Kashief Bogannam  (Kingston, N.H.) registered a career-best of his own in the men's 500-meter. The sprinter edged out Connecticut's Jordan Torney by fractions of a second to place sixth in the event with a 1:05.87 time. Closing out the top eight, junior Thomas Jordan (Needham, Mass.) came in hot on Bogannam's heels to take eighth overall with yet another personal best, clocking in at 1:06.18.
 
Adding to the River Hawks' personal best tally for the day, senior Christopher McCauliff (Lunenburg, Mass.) picked up a seventh-place finish in the men's 1,000-meter with a time of 2:30.04 to beat his previous fastest time by two seconds. Finishing just after, graduate student Liam Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.) closed out the top eight at 2:30.46.
 
UMass Lowell's highest-scoring opportunity of the day came during the men's mile and 3,000-meter trial. With five scoring runners between the two events, the River Hawks brought in an impressive 34 points to make a jump towards the top of the leaderboard. Leading things off for UMass Lowell in the men's mile, graduate student Christopher Alfond (Ashby, Mass.) turned in a first-place time of 4:11.51, missing his fastest indoor time by just a second. Not far behind, graduate student Kyle Cloutier (Lancaster, Mass.) cruised across the line at 4:17.07 for fourth overall and a new career best. The River Hawks' third set of points in the mile came from Noah Bellomo (Hudson, N.H.), whose 4:23.99 mark registered yet another River Hawk personal best.
 
Earning another first-place time, the distance pair of Derek Holmes (Marshfield, Mass.) and Drew Everett (Amesbury, Mass.) took first and third in the 3,000-meter race, clocking in at 8:14.98 and 8:25.43, respectively, to add 16 points to UMass Lowell's total.
 
Sophomore Zachary Lalonde (Tewksbury, Mass.) wrapped up the River Hawks' outing in Cambridge with a stellar 8.42 career-best mark in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Using his height to his advantage, the Massachusetts native glided over his obstacles and across the finish line to pick up an additional five points for UMass Lowell.
 
Completing his final day of competition in the Harvard Multi men's Heptathlon, Stelmach brought home the bronze for the River Hawks, finishing the two-day slate with 4,562 total points.
 
UMass Lowell returns to the track next weekend when the team pays a visit to Rhode Island for the Sorlein Invite on January 15 at the Mackal Fieldhouse.
