River Hawks Close Out John Thomas Terrier Classic Strong

1/30/2022 9:06:00 PM

BOSTON, Mass. – After setting a multitude of records Friday night, the UMass Lowell track and field team resumed action at the John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University on Sunday afternoon.

"It was a good day for the men," said Head Coach Gary Gardner.

Starting things off for the men's, graduate student Joseph Gaudreau (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded a time of 49.17 seconds in the 400-meter to secure eleventh overall in the event. The top-15 time also set a new career-best mark for the veteran sprinter.

Graduate student Cody Moran (Weymouth, Mass.) returned to the track for the River Hawks to record an IC4A/ECAC and NEICAAA qualifying time in the men's 800 meter. Additionally, his 1:52.51 finishing time just missed his all-time fastest mark by less than a second.

"Cody Moran is just rolling back into shape in the 800 meter," commented Gardner on the veteran's performance.

Joining his classmate with a personal best of his own, distance runner Noah Bellomo (Hudson, N.H.) placed seventh in the men's 1,000-meter race, crossing the finish line in 2:24.46 to top his previous best by over a second.

"Noah ran great in the 1,000 meter, just missing the school record," remarked Gardner.

Junior John Riley (Quincy, Mass.) came in sixth in the men's 5000-meter race, missing his top mark by seconds. Capping the strong outing on the track, a trio of distance runners graduate student Ben Drezek (Cumberland, R.I.), freshman Nate DeAngelo (Bristol, Conn.), and freshman Jan Wouter van den Akker (Groningen, Netherlands) all set impressive personal bests in the 3000 meters race. Veteran Drezek shaved nearly nine seconds off his top career time set in 2019 on the same track, toeing the line at 8:09.43. Newcomers DeAngelo and Van Den Akker both showed incredible improvements in their 3,000-meter pace, with DeAngelo cutting nearly 30 seconds off his first collegiate attempt with an 8:14.27 mark and Van Den Akker setting a new all-time best at 8:18.76.

"[We had] some great runs by Ben Drezek, Nte DeAngelo and Wouter Van Den Akker in the 3,000 meters," said Gardner. "Excellent PRs by all three."

In the field events, junior Evans Oduro (Kumasi, Ghana) took eleventh in the long jump event with a distance of 21'2", which was just shy of his personal best. Sophomore Maxwell Davis (Stoneham, Mass.) cleared 4.30 meters (14'1.25") to snag fifth overall.

Next up, the River Hawks travel to Cambridge, Mass., to take on the Harvard Elite Meet on Friday, February 4.
