BOSTON – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team faced off against Boston University in its second game of the season Monday evening, ending in a 1-1 draw after two rainy overtime periods at Nickerson Field.
Ioanna Papatheodorou's (Nea Erithraia, Greece) second goal of the season came less than four minutes into a second-half rally, as the River Hawks kicked-off the road portion of their 2021 campaign.
In the opening 45 minutes, the River Hawks tested BU keeper Gretchen Bennet with four shots, including two on target. The best chance came in the 11th minute when senior captain
Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) fired a low shot, forcing a diving save from the hands of Bennet.
Both teams continued to fire off shots, but it was the home squad to take the advantage with less than 10 minutes to go in the first set. Abigail McNulty received a pass from Geovanna Pereira from 20-yards out, nudging past Wesson and into the upper left corner.
The Terriers generated most of the pressure in the first half, swiping seven shots to UMass Lowell's five. With the added force, rookie
Morgan Wesson (Monson, Mass.) recorded her best output with three saves in the first frame.
Coming out swinging at the half, Papatheodorou brought UMass Lowell level in the 48th minute, weaving through the Terrier defense to bury the shot from the center of the 18-yard mark.
Each side continued to rattle off attempts, but neither team would capitalize on their opportunities forcing the contest into extra minutes.
In the extended periods, Wesson made the only save in the 102nd minute to keep the Terriers from advancing.
From here, the River Hawks will now look to Thursday afternoon when they go to Amherst, Mass. for a match against Massachusetts at 4:00 p.m., which will be played as part of the Kennedy Cup Challenge.
