Fielders Have A Day at UMass Tri-Meet

AMHERST, Mass.—The UMass Lowell track and field squad had a strong showing Saturday afternoon at a tri-meet against in-state rivals Massachusetts and Northeastern at the UMass Amherst Track and Field Complex.

"It was great to get out for another week and continue to give the team a chance to compete. We are improving week-to-week. Just getting in reps in the technical events after a long layoff is essential," said Head Coach Gary Gardner. "It's an awesome feeling to see all the hard work they have put in over the last year pay off."

Senior Chloe Eressy (Centerville, Mass.) led the River Hawks throwers with a pair of top three finishes in the discus and shot put. Eressy claimed first in the discus with a 40.72m toss and second in the shot put, throwing to a personal-best 14.35m mark.

In the high jump, freshman Erin Jensen (Brimfield, Mass.) leapt to a career-best 1.61m to earn second in the event, missing the top spot by a sliver. Meanwhile, junior pole vaulter Rachel Hill (North Reading, Mass.) cleared the 3.20m mark to claim second overall.

Freshman Wonuola Ashaju (Lagos, Nigeria) set a personal-best mark in her second meet as a River Hawk, earning second in the triple-jump with a 11.24m clearance.

On the men's side, UMass Lowell took the top spots in the high jump finals, with junior Juan Avelino (Lynn, Mass.) claiming first with a 1.80m jump. Freshmen Nathan Gill and Lucas Halbrooks tied for the second slot with a pair of 1.75m marks.

Senior Patrick Pang (Peabody, Mass.) threw to a 54.59m mark and first-place finish in the hammer throw, missing his career-best mark by just half a meter.

In just his second collegiate appearance, freshman Maxwell Davis (Stoneham, Mass.) took first as the only pole vaulter to successfully clear the 4.10m height. Rounding out the fielders success for the River Hawks, sophomore Evans Oduro (Kumasi, Ghana) posted a 12.55m mark in the triple jump to claim his second-consecutive first place finish in the event.

The UMass Lowell track and field team is back in action next weekend, April 9-10, at the Ocean State Invite hosted by Brown.
