DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore
Mario Mora Perez (Liberia, Costa Rica) logged his first goal of the season in a 4-1 setback for the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (0-6-0, 0-4-0 AE) at America East foe No. 12 New Hampshire (5-0-1, 4-0-1 AE) on Friday afternoon.
"We had a slow start and put ourselves in an early hole, but I thought the response was pretty good," said Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "If instead of hitting the post we scored to equalize it at one apiece, I think the flow of the game would've changed completely. But we gave up three goals on only three shots on goal in the first half, and that's not going to be good enough at this level. We will have to address several things to give ourselves a better chance at a result on the road."
Sophomore
Jacob Heihsel (Holliston, Mass.) played all 90 minutes in net for the River Hawks, registering three saves. Goalkeeper Alejandro Robles earned the win for the Wildcats with one save. In addition to Mora Perez, sophomore
Denis Petro (Michalovce, Slovakia) also put one shot on goal for UMass Lowell in the contest.
UNH jumped out to a quick, 1-0 edge in the sixth minute when Yannick Bright went top left shelf from the left side of the box. The River Hawks threatened to even the board with back-to-back shots, including one off the post by freshman Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia).
However, the home team pulled away with two more goals before the break, scoring on a shot through traffic by Linus Fallberg in the 16th minute and a header Victor Menudier in the 42nd.
The River Hawks tallied their lone goal in the final seconds of the first half, as senior
Abdi Shariff-Hassan (Lewiston, Maine) crossed a ball into the box for the finish from Mora Perez.
UMass Lowell had a goal called back in the opening minutes of the second before the home team's Fallberg notched a fourth and final Wildcat goal to secure the decision.
The River Hawks now have a quick turnaround, heading back out on the road to visit Hartford on Monday, April 5.
