LOWELL, Mass. -- The 2020-21 season came to an end for the UMass Lowell women's soccer team with a 1-0 loss to Binghamton on Thursday afternoon in the America East Semifinals at Cushing Field.
Â
On a rainy afternoon, the River Hawks (5-2-1) had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal, but the Bearcats (6-1-0) scored early in the second to advance to the championship round.
Â
Junior
Hailey DuBose (Raynham, Mass.) led the team with two shots, both on goal. Classmates
Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) and
Halle Anderson (Stonington, Conn.) each recorded a shot on goal, respectively.
Â
"It was a typical playoff game with one goal winning it and unfortunately we were on the shorter end of things today," commented Head Coach
Mira Novak. "I am extremely proud of the team and everything they have been able to accomplish this season, both individually and as a unit. This season has showed a taste of what we can do, and we're looking forward to getting back in the fall."
Â
The only goal of the game came in the 53rd minute when Binghamton's Dora Hayes went unassisted to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead just ten minutes into the second frame.
Â
However, the River Hawks battled in the waning minutes, generating a number of chances, including an attempt by Anderson in the 75th minute that forced a save by BU keeper, Haylee Poltorak. Unfortunately, the Binghamton defense held strong, with UMass Lowell falling, 1-0.
Â
In net, sophomore goalkeeper
Farrell O'Shaughnessy (Bedford, Mass.) made her second start this season, tallying two saves on the day. Meanwhile, Haylee Poltorak played all 90 minutes for Binghamton, recording the shutout and making four saves.
Â
The game concludes the 2020-21 season for the River Hawks. Lowell soccer will be back in action for a traditional season next fall.
