LOWELL, Mass.—The UMass Lowell men's hockey team (7-8-1, 7-8-1 Hockey East) closed out the regular season this Saturday with Senior Night at the Tsongas Center, earning a 3-3 tie against No. 10 Boston University (10-3-1,10-3-1 Hockey East). Despite the hard-fought 65-minute battle, the Terriers ultimately earned the extra point in the Hockey East standings with a 3-2 shootout victory.
Leading the charge for the River Hawks, senior forward
Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ontario) tallied two goals on the night, including the game-tying power play goal. Junior defenseman
Jon McDonald (Livonia, Mich.) also had a two-point outing, picking up assists on both of Levesque's goals. Junior
Chase Blackmun (Hudson, Wis.) notched a goal on the extra-man opportunity for UMass Lowell to register his sixth of the season. Additionally, four River Hawks—
Reid Stefanson (Winnipeg, Manitoba),
Ben Meehan (Walpole, Mass.),
Andre Lee (Karlstad Sweden) and
Seth Barton (Kelowna, BC)—each had an assist in tonight's tilt. Between the pipes,
Owen Savory (Cambridge, Ontario) made 25 saves on the night.
"I thought it was a good hockey game. I liked our guys' effort. Obviously, we were shorthanded a few more times than I'd like, but that's the way things go sometimes," said head coach
Norm Bazin. "I liked our overall hunger and effort. Obviously, we came up short in the shootout, but we get the point for the tie."
UMass Lowell was first to strike in tonight's contest after a Terrier penalty gave way to a River Hawks power play. Finding a pass from Stefanson, Blackmun fired a shot from the top of the circle to give the River Hawks the 1-0 edge at 12:29. Earning a power-play opportunity of their own, BU quickly evened the score at 1-1. Just over a minute later, Levesque found the back of the net for his first of the night off looks from McDonald and Lee to give UMass Lowell the advantage once again. As time expired, an unassisted shot from BU's Luke Tuch sent both teams to the first intermission locked at 2-2.
Savory fended off seven attempts from the Terriers in the second, but a loose puck off the pad save gave BU the opportunity to take their only lead of the game at just over five minutes into the second frame.
An early Terrier penalty at 1:36 in the third period brought the River Hawks power play unit back to the ice. With a look from McDonald, Levesque fired one past Commesso, evening the teams at 3-3 for the remainder of the frame.
Despite taking a 4-1 edge in shots over BU in the overtime period, the River Hawks headed to their first shootout of the season. After three rounds, the teams remained tied at 2-2 with goals from Levesque and Lee, but the Terriers ultimately captured the extra point in the fourth round by a 3-2 margin.
The River Hawks await their first opponent for this year's Hockey East Tournament.
