River Hawks Hit the Field against New York Opponents to Open 2021

NEW YORK, N.Y. –
The UMass Lowell softball team will open the new season this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders in New York. The River Hawks will first head to St. John's for a pair of games on Saturday, March 6 before wrapping up the weekend with a twin bill at Fordham on Sunday, March 7. Both sets of games are scheduled to begin at noon.
  
LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks concluded last season with a 9-7 victory at Belmont on March 11, 2020. The rest of the slate was then cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
STILL THE CHAMPS
UMass Lowell is still the reigning America East Regular-Season Champion after winning the league in 2019 and having the remainder of the 2020 season halted.
 
LEADING THE FLOCK
Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.), now a graduate student, returns to the River Hawk lineup in 2021. Last season, she paced the team with a .491 batting average, a .965 slugging percentage, 22 RBI and eight home runs. Senior Maria Moccio (Feeding Hills, Mass.) also returns to action in 2021 after hitting .347 and adding to the offense with 17 RBI. Senior Olivia Labbe (Rochester, Mass.) totaled a team-best 15 runs and four doubles last year, as well.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Lovina Capria (Deltona, Fla.) paced the pitching staff in 2020 with a 4-1 record and 28 strikeouts. She owns a 30-17 career record with 216 strikeouts.

The River Hawks were picked second in the 2021 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT
The River Hawks battled through five extra innings games in 2020 with a 2-3 record. The team is now 18-13 in extras at the Division I level.
