Box Score QUEENS, N.Y. – Redshirt-senior
Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) went 2-for-3 at the dish, as the UMass Lowell baseball team (0-3) wrapped up a three-game series at St. John's with a 3-1 setback on Sunday.
"We played good baseball today," said Head Coach
Ken Harring. "The difference was they got the big hit when they needed it."
Climo added a walk, as well as the team's lone run scored in the outing. Junior
Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.), sophomore
Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) and classmate
Jiovel Lantigua (Spring Hill, Fla.) each chipped in with one hit apiece, as well. Junior
Joshua Becker (Burlington, Mass.) went 4.1 innings on the mound with three strikeouts in the loss.
The Red Storm took an early, 1-0 lead in their first trip to the plate, as Justin Folz doubled in Jake Lazzaro, who had reached on a walk.
That lead was short-lived, though, as the River Hawks responded in the top of the second, when Climo led off with a single up the middle before advancing all the way to third on a shot to right center by Proto and scoring on a ball put on the ground by Lantigua.
The 1-1 score would stand for the next two complete innings until St. John's pulled away during a two-run fifth thanks to a clutch homer by David Glancy over the wall in left.
The River Hawks threatened to cut into the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but were unable to capitalize. The visitors then put one runner on in both the seventh and ninth innings, by St. John's withstood the pressure to secure the 3-1 outcome.
Next up, the River Hawks will visit Rhode Island for a three-game set on Saturday-Sunday, March 6-7.
