AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Lowell men's basketball team will wrap up a five-game road swing at in-state foe Massachusetts on Wednesday evening.
A WIN WOULD
A win against the Minutemen would be the first for the River Hawks in the Division I series between the sister schools. It would also give the River Hawks a three-game sweep of their Atlantic 10 opponents this season and their fourth victory overall against the A10.
LEADING THE FLOCK
Max Brooks has averaged a team-best 11.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game through the first five outings in 2021-22. He also paces the squad with 10 blocks.
Everette Hammond, who adds 10.8 points per game, and
Justin Faison, who chips in with 10.6 points, boast 11 steals apiece, as well.
LAST TIME OUT
Max Brooks dunked his way to a career-high 23 points, as UMass Lowell pulled off a second-half comeback to knock off Atlantic 10 foe George Washington, 67-56, on the road on Nov. 19. Brooks led the way with 10 made baskets, as he shot 66.7% (10-15) from the floor.
Ayinde Hikim also logged a personal-best 18 points in the contest with three steals.
Everette Hammond, who chipped in with 11 points, added in season bests of six assists and seven rebounds, leading the team in both of those categories.
CALL IT A COMEBACK
Although the River Hawks trailed by as many as 12 late in the first half at GW, they never gave in and outscored their hosts by 20 in the second half to pull off their biggest comeback of the young season.
OFF AND RUNNING
With the win at GW, the River Hawks are off to their best start at the Division I level, 4-1.
SHARING IS CARING
The River Hawks are showing off their depth this season, as three of the team's five games so far have featured 10 point scorers.
HERE'S THE DOWN LOW
The River Hawks worked hard to drive to the hoop against CCSU with their first 22 points coming from the paint. With a total of 40 points down low at Goerge Washington, the team is now averaging 35.2 points per game from the paint.
TURNING INTO POINTS
Turnovers were the difference against the Colonials, as the River Hawks took advantage of 21 points scored off 19 GW turnovers on Nov. 19.
DEFENSE WINS GAMES
This year, Coach Duquette has made defense a huge point of emphasis for his program, which typically leads the America East in several offensive categories. So far, the River Hawks have only allowed more than 56 points once this season and are second in the league in scoring defense. The team held CCSU to a season-low 53 points on Nov. 17.
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL
So far this year, UMass Lowell owns a 4-0 record when leading at halftime.
CAREER DAYS
Max Brooks has turned in back-to-back career performances. He first finished with new career highs for points (18), rebounds (11), field goals (9) and steals (3) against CCSU before besting that outing with 23 points and 10 field goals at George Washington.
STEALING THE SHOW
In the opener against Rivier, the River Hawks earned 10 takeaways for the first time since Nov. 26, 2019 against Brown. Since then, the team is averaging a DI program-best 9.2 steals per game.
