River Hawks Face 2-1 Double OT Setback Against Catamounts

BURLINGTON, Vt. -  Despite a strong defensive showing, the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (7-5-2, 4-2-1 AE) was only able to tally one goal, falling to conference opponent Vermont (8-5-1, 5-1-0 AE), 2-1, in double overtime on Sunday afternoon.

Up against a Catamount defense that had not allowed a goal in over four games, sophomore Calliste Brookshire (Kingston, Mass.) broke the streak and put the River Hawks up 1-0 just 19 minutes into the action. Defensively, freshman goalie Lisa Sjögren (Skelleftea, Sweden) had four saves on 25 total shots seen in over 100 minutes of play.

"The one thing I would say we struggle with was the quality of finishing and decision making in the final third. To win games, you have to score goals, and we just did not make good decisions in terms of our shot selection and putting some of these chances away that we created," said Head Coach Mira Novak, "I think we had some quality shots, but the quality of the finish had to be better."

UMass Lowell struck first in the 19th minute when Brookshire maneuvered past the Catamount defenders. Finding herself in a 1-on-1, she fired in a shot to the bottom left of the net, sneaking it past Catamount goalie Lydia Kessel to put the River Hawks on top early.

Vermont began to find its footing on offense as the half continued, constantly creating opportunities in hopes of knotting up the game. In the final few minutes of the opening frame, the Catamounts continued to pressure the River Hawk back line. Despite Vermont's multiple scoring attempts, however, the UMass Lowell defense held strong, recording multiple saves and blocks to keep the lead heading into the locker room.

The River Hawks opened the half strong with a rush down the field. Setup right in front of the net, senior Dunja Mostarac (Belgrade, Serbia) ran into the box and headed the ball right at the top of the net but was thwarted by Kessel.

Shortly after, the Catamounts earned their chance to strike as Vermont's Bailey Ayer launched a shot on net that was easily knocked away by Sjögren. With the defense unable to control the ball off the save, Alex West of the Catamounts took advantage of the loose ball and drilled in a rebound shot to even the score at 1-1.

Both teams took their shots in hopes of jumping to a last-second lead as regulation inched to a close. Neither offense was able to find the back of the net, forcing extra minutes.

Despite a close chance by senior Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass) in the first overtime period, the teams trudged on into a second bonus frame. An unfortunate penalty kick opportunity handed the loss to the River Hawks, as Catamount midfielder Alyssa Oviedo snuck one past Sjögren to deal the 2-1 double-overtime decision.

The River Hawks continue their road trip on Sunday, Oct. 24th, when they take on Stony Brook at 1 p.m.
