LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell Hockey Head Coach
Norm Bazin has announced that seniors
Charlie Levesque and
Connor Sodergren will serve as co-captains for the 2020-21 season.
"Charlie and Connor received high praise during our post-season evaluation process for their leadership, communication styles and overall approach to improving every day," Bazin said. "They both have respect from the staff and players."
Both forwards have already seen action in over 100 games during their collegiate tenures, making them experienced, veteran leaders, who provide a solid example of what UMass Lowell Hockey stands for. Off the ice, both Levesque and Sodergren are three-time Hockey East All-Academic Team honorees, as well, majoring in chemistry and business finance and management, respectively.
"Charlie possesses strong communication skills, and is competitive and detail oriented in everything he approaches," explained Bazin. "He serves as an excellent conduit between the staff and the players. His passion for excellence is apparent daily in the way he attacks his work in the classroom and on the ice. He is an honor roll pre-med student, who approaches his role as a leader very seriously. Charlie is a team-first person who cares immensely about his teammates. "
"Connor's aggressive style on the ice has gained the respect of both opponents and teammates," he added. "He has an elite level of determination and drive to improve as a player. Connor compliments Charlie, and I believe he will do an excellent job."
Bazin feels as though this leadership team will be especially important for this year given the difficult circumstances surrounding the pandemic.
"I felt it was necessary to proceed with this announcement now. It will help us prepare for the upcoming season, as we continue to adapt and improve during these challenging and ever changing times. This is a huge honor. I am proud of them both and they will represent our program well."
The last time the River Hawks were led by co-captains was the 2015-16 season, when AJ White and Mike Kapla served in that role. Assistant captains for the upcoming season will be named at a later date.
