BOSTON – After clinching home court advantage for the first time in Division I postseason history, three members of the UMass Lowell women's basketball team were named to All-Conference Teams, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.
For their efforts in the historic 2019-20 campaign, sophomore Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team, while senior guard Ren'Cia Rolling (Lansing, Ill.) earned a spot on the Third Team with an All-Academic team selection, as well.
After a standout freshman season, Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) earned herself a spot on the All-Rookie Team along with an All-Defensive Team nod to round out the awards.
Idom, who registered double figure scoring in 19 of the 29 regular season games picks up her first conference award. Leading the squad with a team-high 11.8 points per game, the sophomore guard made her mark this year, setting career-highs in points (23), rebounds (11), assist (7), steals (5) and blocks (1). She tallied her first career double-double in the victory against UMBC, pitching in 15 points and 11 rebounds, respectively. She ranks sixth in the conference with 1.7 steals to help the squad earn the top spot overall with 8.34 on the season.
Throughout the 2019-20 season, Rolling has contributed an average of 11.6 points per game, setting a personal-best of 20 points in the win against Binghamton earlier this season. Snagging a career-high six steals against LIU, Rolling leads all River Hawks to rank second in the America East. This is her first time receiving Third Team honors and her first time on the All-Academic Team, compiling a 3.63 GPA while studying criminal justice.
Sanchez received her first conference award thanks to her offensive prowess, picking up a career-high 19 points in the recent win over UAlbany while being the only River Hawk to rank in the AE top 10 in both steals (1.9) and assists (3.1). The forward finishes the regular season third on the team in scoring (9.3) while knocking down a team-high 62 percent from the line. Recording a personal-best eight steals in the win against Maine, Sanchez now joins four other River Hawks tied for second place for single-game leaders in steals.
The three-seeded River Hawks will begin postseason play when they take on the six-seeded Retrievers this Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the Tsongas Center.
The four quarterfinal winners will square off in the semifinals on Sunday, March 8 at the two highest remaining seeds. The bracket will be re-seeded with the highest-remaining seed hosting the lowest-remaining seed and the second-highest remaining seed hosting the second-lowest remaining seed.
The two semifinal winners will play for the America East title and an automatic NCAA bid on March 13 at the highest remaining seed on ESPNU.
