LOWELL, Mass. – For the 13th time this season three different River Hawks scored in the double-digits, as the UMass Lowell women's basketball team (12-11, 8-2 AE) fell to America East foe Stony Brook (22-1, 10-0 AE), 89-69, at the Tsongas Center on Wednesday night.
Sophomore
Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) lead the charge with 18 points, while freshman
Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) added 17, posting five assists, as well. Freshman
Denise Solis (Windsor, Conn.) rounded out the scorers with 14 points, including the teams-high four rebounds.
Stony Brook, which outrebounded UMass Lowell 27-11 in the second half, outscored the River Hawks 52-34 in the paint and controlled the overall rebounding battle, pulling down 45 boards to the home team's 23.
"One-two matchup in our conference which just goes to show how far ahead Stony Brook is in our conference," commented head coach
Tom Garrick. "I think we are a pretty solid team defensively, but from the start of the game they played more physical than we did, and they found options when we tried to take them away.
Setting the tone, the Seawolves went on the attack after securing the opening tip to jump out on a 6-0 run, but a Sanchez triple at 8:06 put the River Hawks on the board cutting the deficit in half, 6-3. Stony Brook answered with another 6-0 run to increase the visitors lead before UMass Lowell closed out the quarter with points from Idom and Sanchez to enter the second, trailing 22-15.
Trading points for the opening minutes of the second, the River Hawks trailed by nine after Sanchez recorded her first assist of the night by feeding a pass to Idom for the driving layup. The River Hawks remaining points would come off of free throw chances from Solis and Sanchez, until freshman
Shamyjha Price (Pittsburgh, Pa.) drained a triple at the first half buzzer, cutting the gap, 46-30.
A shot from outside the arc by Sanchez opened the third followed by two extra points from Solis to give the River Hawks their largest run of the contest, but the Seawolves would take their lead into double digits after a 5-0 spurt with four minutes remaining.
The Stony Brook advantage would reach 19 before the River Hawks entered the fourth trailing, 65-56, after the visitors posted a triple with one second on the clock.
The River Hawks continued their battle into the final stretch, attacking in the paint with points from Idom, including a triple from freshman
Kaylen Banwareesingh (Bronx, N.Y.) to give the home team their second best run of the night.
However, it would be as close as the River Hawks would get. Stony Brook answered UMass Lowell's run with shots from inside the paint to close out the victory, 89-69.
Up next, the River Hawks will look for their second series sweep this season, as they take on UMBC on their home court, Saturday at 12 p.m.
