River Hawks Head to FGCU Invitational This Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. –
The UMass Lowell softball team (2-3) will head to the Sunshine State for its second of four early season tournaments this weekend, as the River Hawks are set to take part in the FGCU Spring Break Invitational hosted by Florida Gulf Coast on February 21-23.
 
The River Hawks will play five games at the three-day event beginning with matchups against Michigan State and Harvard on Friday. The team will then square off against Fordham and host FGCU on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend against Southern Illinois on Sunday.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks opened the 2020 season with a 2-3 record at the Houston Invitational on Feb. 7-9. The teams defeated Fordham, 9-8, in the season opener on Feb. 7 before picking up a 7-4 win in extra innings against Houston on Feb. 8.
 
LEADING THE FLOCK
Through five games, junior Sarah Ratcliffe (Pelham, N.H.) paces the team with a .444 batting average, while senior Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) follows with a .353 average and three home runs. Junior Maria Moccio (Feeding Hills, Mass.) boasts seven RBI on six hits. Junior Lovina Capria (Deltona, Fla.) paces the pitching staff with a 2-0 record and a 3.27 ERA, while freshman Ryley White (Wareham, Mass.) totals eight strikeouts.
 
MILESTONE MOMENT
With the win against Houston on Feb. 8, Head Coach Danielle Henderson secured her 100th career win. In doing so, she becomes the fourth coach in program history to reach that milestone.
 
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT
The win at Houston on Feb. 8 marked the River Hawks' first extra-innings victory of the new season. The team is now 17-10 in extras at the Division I level.
 
PLAYING THE LONG GAME
The River Hawks, who have logged at least one home run in each of the games so far this year, lead the America East with eight long balls in 2020. Courtney Cashman already has three dingers this season for a career total of 26, which puts her just nine away from tying the program's all-time record (35).
 
TOUGH AT THE PLATE
Maria Moccio and senior Marianne Sparacia (Spring Hill, Fla.) are tied for first in the nation right now as the toughest players to strikeout, as neither one has gone down by way of the K in 2020.
 
WALK IT OUT
Courtney Cashman totals 80 walks so far this season, putting her just two away from tying Ariana Darcy '15 for the program's record in that category (82).
 
NATIONAL NEWS
As a team, UMass Lowell is ranked seventh in the nation right now for home runs per game (1.60). Individually, Courtney Cashman is fourth in the country with 0.60 home runs per game.
 
WEEKLY AWARDS
Lovina Capria garnered a Pitcher of the Week nod to open the season with a 2-0 effort in the circle at the Houston Invitational on Feb. 7-9.
 
OTHER NOTABLES
Ryley White struck out six batters in her collegiate debut against Houston (2.7) … Maria Moccio logged a career-high six RBI against Fordham (2.7).
