LOWELL, Mass. - UMass Lowell temporarily paused men's basketball activities last week after two members of the program tested positive for COVID-19 during routine surveillance testing.
Â
The university immediately initiated its isolation and quarantine protocols and has continued surveillance testing team members, with no new positive cases. The team expects to resume its normal schedule and practices next Wednesday, at the end of the 14-day quarantine period. The team's first scheduled game is November 25.
Â
"The health and safety of our players, coaches, staff and the university community are our top priority," said UMass Lowell Director of Athletics
Peter Casey. "Our testing and other protocols are in place for this reason. We've been working with the NCAA, America East Conference and the university to prepare for a safe season."
Â
Regular surveillance testing has not resulted in any other positive COVID-19 cases among student-athletes on the other active teams, which includes women's basketball and men's ice hockey.
