ST. LOUIS, Mo. – UMass Lowell baseball alum
Danny Mendick has been named a finalist for the 2020 Gold Glove Awards, as announced by Rawlings Sporting Goods on Thursday.
The Gold Glove Awards honor the best individual fielding performances at each position in both the American League and National League. Mendick is joined by Cesar Hernandez of the Indians, Nicky Lopez of the Royals and Jonathan Schoop of the Tigers as finalists at second base in the American League.
"What an incredible run for Danny," said UMass Lowell Baseball Head Coach
Ken Harring. "His team makes the playoffs and his peers nominate him for a Gold Glove. It just shows that good things happen to good people who work hard."
Mendick racked up four defensive runs saved in 226 innings at second base during his first full season in the MLB with the White Sox. In 2020, he totaled 39 putouts and 66 assists, while turning 15 double plays. He logged just one miscue, for an impressive .991 fielding percentage, as well.
The 2020 Gold Glove winners will be determined from voting by the managers and coaches in each league, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. The winners will be unveiled during a live, one-hour "Baseball Tonight" broadcast on ESPN Tuesday, November 3 at 7 p.m.
