River Hawks Begin Road Swing at Hartford

LOWELL, Mass. –
After their most impressive start to conference action since joining the ranks of Division I the UMass Lowell women's basketball team (6-9, 2-0 AE) will look to continue their three-game win streak as they head to Hartford (0-15, 0-2 AE) for Wednesday night tilt with the Hawks, before heading to Binghamton (11-3, 0-1 AE) for a 2 p.m. tip-off Saturday afternoon.
 
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
After opening America East action the River Hawks picked up back-to-back wins, improving to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in the AE. With a team-best 11.6 points per game, senior Ren'Cia Rolling continues to sparkle on the offensive end, scoring 10 or more points in ten contests this season. Rookie, Denise Solis sits in the top spot defensively, grabbing 6.5 boards per game. As a unit, UMass Lowell is shooting 34 percent from the field, and 65 percent from the line. 
 
SCOUTING HARTFORD
The Hawks enters Wednesday's contest with a 0-15 overall record, dropping back-to-back America East games against Maine (87-73) and New Hampshire (72-71). Junior guard Jada Lucas leads the squad with 12.3 points on the season, putting her ninth in the America East. Sophomore forward Sierra Smith is averaging 7.3 rebounds per game, sitting fourth in the conference. As a unit Hartford is shooting 31 percent from the field while, averaging 39.5 rebounds per game.
 
SERIES HISTORY VS. HARTFORD
This will mark the 13th meeting between the River Hawks and the Hawks. The home team holds a 1-11 edge in the all-time series with their last meeting resulting in a 69-45 road loss for the River Hawks. Their only victory came in during the 2015 where a pair of free throws in the final seconds put UMass Lowell up 65-62. 
 
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
Kicking-off the season on a 10-game win streak, the Bearcats had one of the most successful starts since their 2000-01 campaign. After dropping their America East opener to UAlbany, 66-53, Binghamton drops to 11-3 on the season and will face UMBC before welcoming the River Hawks. Senior guard Kai Moon leads the squad and conference with 21.1 points on the season. Sophomore forward Annie Ramil is averaging 7.4 rebounds per game, sitting third in the conference. As a unit Binghamton is shooting 43 percent from the field and 77 percent from the line.
 
SERIES HISTORY VS. BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats have won the last eight matchups between the two schools and holds a 4-12 all-time advantage over the River Hawks. UMass Lowell fell to Binghamton, 58-53, on February 20th of last season where despite trailing for most of the contest, the River Hawks used a 21-6 run to draw even with just under four minutes.  Linda Svenne and Kharis Idom combined for four three-pointers, with Svenne finishing the night with 10 points, and Idom scoring all nine of hers in the final 20 minutes.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Tiahna Sears logged her first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to help propel the squad to a 75-64 victory against fellow America East member UMBC (4-9, 0-2 AE) on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the River Hawks pick up their second-straight conference victory for the first time since the 2012-13 season in the NE10. Sophomore Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) recorded her first career double-double as well, pitching in 15 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Ren'Cia Rolling (Lansing, Ill.) scored 17 points to pace the offense with Sears.
 
NCAA TOP-100
Ren'Cia Rolling is ranked 55th overall in the NCAA for steals with 2.2 on the season, helping the squad earn the 80th spot overall. She also leads the team in minutes, averaging 36.51 per game to rank at No. 30, while Jaliena Sanchez is second on the team with 35.42 minutes for 61st. Solis is the only other River Hawk to rank in a statistical category, ranking 89th overall in the NCAA for free throws made, making 49 out of 72 attempts for 68%.
 
TWICE IS NICE
With their win over UMBC and UNH, the River Hawks start conference play with a 2-0 record for the first time in Division I history. UMass Lowell last saw opening conference wins against Palm Beach Atlantic (84-76 2OT) and Southern New Hampshire (96-82) back in the 2012-13 season where the River Hawks ran out on a nine-game win streak.
 
MILESTONE WATCH (500 POINTS)
Off a three-pointer with two minutes left in the fourth in the latest contest against UMBC, Rolling recorded 17 points to give her, her 400th career-point. Through the 15 games, Ren'Cia Rolling has drained at least one shot from outside the arc, totaling 176 points on the season.
 
ALL FOR ONE, ONE FOR ALL
In the victory against UMBC every River Hawk who hit the court totaled at least two points, repeating last season's matchup against the Retrievers where UMass Lowell came out on top, 62-41. This marks the fifth time in Division I history, recording a 3-2 record between the meetings.
 
THAT 3-0 FEELIN X2
For the second time this season the River Hawks picked up three consecutive wins in a week to give them their best start to conference action since joining the ranks of DI. UMass Lowell saw their best run back in 2015 when they defeated New Hampshire (70-65), Vermont (72-64) and NJIT (60-51) to finish out their season on a three-game win streak.
 
DOUBLE TROUBLE
In both victories over UMBC and FDU this past week, three different River Hawks tallied first-career double-doubles. Tiahna Sears (17 pts, 10 rebs) and Kharis Idom (15 pts, 11 rebs) each posted multi-point efforts in the 75-64 win against UMBC, while Denise Solis grabbed 21 points and 14 rebounds in the overtime victory against FDU, including the game-tying free throws. Solis is the first rookie River Hawk to notch a double-double, since the 2008-09 season where Bianca Simmons posted 28 points and 12 rebounds in the 73-64 win over Le Moyne.
 
SHE'S ON A ROLL
After setting her career-high six steals in the contest against LIU, Ren'Cia Rolling sits in the second spot amongst America East players with 2.2 steals per game, helping the squad earn the top spot, with 8.73.
 
A DIME A DOZEN
The River Hawks secured a season-high with 16 assists on 29 made field goals in the battle against UMBC (1.5). With her five assists in the contest, Sanchez is averaging a team-best 2.7 dimes per game this season.
 
FREE BASKETBALL
The River Hawks secured their second overtime victory in the Division I era after battling Fairleigh Dickinson, 61-56. UMass Lowell played their first two Division I overtime games during the 2015-16 season, dropping both. Before that, the River Hawks played in a 96-94 victory at Pace University on January 19, 2013. Earlier in that season the River Hawks also played in a double overtime contest, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic, 84-76, on Jan. 2. 
 
EIGHT IN A ROW
During the first eight games, Ren'Cia Rolling scored 10 or more points for the River Hawks, which includes matching her career-high 19 points in the 56-54 win against Central Connecticut (12.5). She is currently on another scoring run with three games scoring 10+ points for a career total of 23 contests.
 
PROTECT THE HOUSE
Solis currently leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game for the River Hawks, which ranks 10th among America East players. Her 2.8 offensive rebounds per game is second in the conference, helping the squad earn the third spot overall with 13.5 offensive rebounds per game.
