River Hawks Face a 4-1 Setback at No. 11 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman Berbel Rozema (Rotterdam, Netherlands) logged her first collegiate goal, as the UMass Lowell field hockey team (1-2) was defeated, 4-1, by No. 11 Virginia (3-0) in squad's first road contest of the year on Friday afternoon.
"We battled hard against a sharp and disciplined Virginia team," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "The staff is proud of the team's performance. We are focused on competing at a very high level each and every game, and we met those expectations today."

Rozema led the River Hawks with three shots on goal in the outing. Freshman Sofie Knook (Amsterdam, Netherlands) added two chances on target of her own. Senior Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) and sophomore Rose Cuozzo (Wilmington, Mass.) split time in the cage, registering three and one saves, respectively. As a team, UMass Lowell took an 8-2 advantage on corners in the contest.

The Cavaliers set the tone early with a goal less than three minutes into play from Makayla Gallen, who dribbled through the defense before finding an opening in the corner of the cage.

Rozema and Knook threatened in the second quarter, but the UVA goalkeeper made back-to-back saves. Gallen then tipped in her second goal of the afternoon to extend the home team's lead in the 22nd minute.

Following Virginia's third tally late in the third quarter, the River Hawks battled for five straight corners, but Virginia's Erin Shanahan would score on a breakaway in the final minute to make the score 4-0.

The visitors held off the ACC power in the fourth, and Rozema put UMass Lowell on the board in the 53rd minute, finishing a rebound on a corner opportunity. However, Virginia was able to run out the clock and seal the 4-1 margin. Â

Friday's contest marked the first ever meeting between the two squads. The River Hawks now have a week off until next Friday, September 13 when they take on their third straight nationally ranked opponent at Northwestern at 1 p.m.
