Danny Mendick Gets the Call from the Chicago White Sox

9/3/2019 3:02:00 PM

LOWELL, Mass. -- The former 22nd round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft has become the fifth UMass Lowell player to be called up to the majors, as Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.) has been added to the 40-man roster of the Chicago White Sox, the club announced on Tuesday, after spending 2019 in AAA with the Charlotte Knights.

In his two years with the River Hawks, Mendick batted .317 and started all 85 games that he appeared in, adding 100 base hits and 64 RBI. The infielder was named to the 2014 America East All-Conference Second Team and earned First Team honors as a senior. The 2015 graduate also picked up ABCA/Rawlings Division I Second Team and NEIBA Second Team accolades following his final season.

"This is the ultimate achievement to a kid who went unrecruited out of high school. It just proves that hard work and mental toughness go a long way," remarked Head Coach Ken Harring. "Danny was the ultimate teammate who held himself accountable to a standard of excellence that I had never seen before. He plays the game with a chip on his shoulder who uses that chip to prove people wrong. I couldn't be more proud of a former player for reaching his ultimate goal: the Major Leagues."

Mendick, the program's Division I leader for batting average (.317), ranks sixth among the program's Division I career leaders in RBI and third with 230 assists. His 16 doubles in 2015 are tied for first for a single-season in DI, and his 130 assists as a senior are good for third.

In his first season with the Knights, the AAA affiliate of the White Sox, Mendick set career highs with 17 home runs, 64 RBI, 19 stolen bases, 75 runs, 133 hits and .81 OPS. He ended the season leading the team in hits and stolen bases (19), while ranking second with 26 doubles.

Mendick will join the White Sox in Cleveland for a three-game set with the Indians. Stay tuned for any updates via the UMass Lowell baseball Twitter page, @RiverHawkBB.
