LOWELL, Mass. -- Stanley Alves' (Minas Gerias, Brazil) equalizer in the 80th minute sent the UMass Lowell men's soccer team and Quinnipiac to a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes at Cushing Field on Monday afternoon.
The River Hawks (0-1-1) sandwiched their two tallies around the Bobcats' (0-1-1) pair of goals in the final minutes of the first half to stun the hosts and take a 2-1 lead into the half.
Chase Reichenberg (Hamburg, Germany) opened the scoring in the 13th minute on a counterattack following a Quinnipiac free kick that
Renato Kauzlaric (Zagreb, Croatia) corralled and sent to the defender streaking up the field.Â
"I thought that were a lot of good things that we saw from our group out there today," commented Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "We let off for three minutes at the end of the first half and obviously paid the price. We did a good job of creating chances and Quinnipiac is a disciplined team as they made us work hard for our opportunities today. The conversation this week will be about staying tuned in and focused for the full 90 minutes."
With no attempts on target through the first 41 minutes, Quinnipiac pulled even in the 42nd minute on Eamon Whelan's shot that snuck through Patrick Gujic (Bjelovar, Croatia) into the corner. Following a free kick in the 44tth minute, Romain Daniellou added a goal to his assist as he broke into the box and gave the visitors their first lead of the season.
UMass Lowell held the advantage in pressure and opportunities in the second half, but could not draw even until Kauzlaric sent a cross to
Denis Petro (Michalovce, Slovakia) and the freshman delivered a perfect ball to Alves just outside the six-yard box and flicked it into the corner to right of the keeper.Â
The hosts out shot Quinnipiac, 17-11, including an 11-6 buffer in the second half and overtime periods, as the River Hawks recorded the only two attempts in the extra 20 minutes.
Figueroa and his squad return to the road for a Friday night tilt at Holy Cross, scheduled for 6 p.m on September 6.
