River Hawks Drop Road Match to Brown, 4-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (0-3-1,) fell 4-0 at Brown (2-0-0) on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Redshirt-junior, Lauren Huff (Brandon, Fla.) stopped a season-high 7 shots in the loss.

"We started off well in the first 20 minutes, being able to keep possession of the ball and control the game," said Head Coach Mira Novak. "Fortunately, we had the chance to go up for the penalty kick, so I think going into half time we were positive but going into the second half we weren't able to stop the counterattack."

The River Hawks were in a prime position to score first when they were awarded a penalty kick during the 35th minute of the game. Freshman Hildur Gunnarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) ripped the shot directly on target, but the keeper was there with the save.

The Brown Bears opened up the scoring a couple of minutes later, when Sydney Cummings blasted a free kick from 25 yards out, to the front of the box, where Ava Seelenfreund was able to tap the ball past Huff into the bottom right corner of the net.

Looking to rally in the second half, sophomore Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) sent a free kick in the 47th minute from 25 yards out that just missed the upper right corner of the net.

Increasing the Brown Bear lead to 2-0 in the 49th minute, Seelenfreund was able to snag the ball from the defense and get the volley off a blocked shot from six yards out.

Celia Story was able to push the Brown Bears lead to 3-0 in the 62nd minute, when Star White sent a cross pass to her from 12 yards out, that sailed into the top center of the net.

Scoring the final goal of the game for Brown in the 78th minute, KK Haug, dribbled past the defense from 20 yards out to put the ball into the back-left corner of the net, bringing the final score to 4-0.

The River Hawks will continue their journey on the road as they take on Providence (Sept. 5), Quinnipiac (Sept. 11) and Harvard (Sept. 18). The next time the squad will see home action will be on Saturday Sept. 21 when they take on UCONN for Coach Appreciation Night.

"It's going to be another tough challenge, because providence is a fast and athletic team," commented Novak. "Were happy to be getting to the end of this stretch, but we need to show up on Thursday ready to compete."
