NEWTON, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell women's soccer team suffered its second loss of the season in a 4-1 non-conference meeting with Boston College at Newton Campus Field.
Â
"I think it was a game of two different halves," stated Head Coach
Mira Novak. "We conceded two goals early, so we had to adjust in the locker room at half time. But we came out as a different team in the second half and were able to keep the ball and play the way we wanted to play."
Â
The Eagles struck first, less than five minutes into the game, when Riley Lochhead sent cross pass to Olivia Vaughn who was able to find the bottom left corner of the net.
Â
Three minutes later, the Eagles increased the score to 2-0 when redshirt-junior,
Lauren Huff (Brandon, Fla.) attempted a diving save, but BC's Sam Smith was able to tap the ball into the back of the net.
Â
The River Hawks recorded the first shot of the game in the 14th minute with a bullet from freshman
Cristina Blaya (Madrid, Spain.) that just missed the back of the net and sailed over the crossbar.
Â
BC was able to increase their lead to 3-0, when Mia Karras threw the ball into Vaughn helping her slip past the goalkeeper to put the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
Â
After back-to-back substitutions, the Eagles were able to advance their lead when Francesca Venezia blasted a shot from 20 yards out that ricocheted off of Huff, landing in front of BC's Alison Heckman who was able to tap the ball over the sophomore defender
Dunja Mostarac (Belgrade, Serbia.), bringing the score to 4-0.
Â
Coming back in the second half, the River Hawks were able to get on the board when Blaya sent a pass down the field to sophomore
Lily Fabian (Monson, Mass.) who was able to push the ball past the goalkeeper into the back-right corner of the net.
Â
With a final shot from sophomore
Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.) in the 87th minute, the River Hawks were unable to equalize the score.
Â
The River Hawks will return to action Thursday for the home opener against Massachusetts, to see who will take home the Kennedy Cup. Game time at Cushing Field is set for 6 p.m.
