LOWELL, Mass. – River Hawk distance runner
Paul Hogan (Burlington Mass.) was named the America East Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete. The conference, Thursday, named a scholar-athlete in each of the six America East sponsored spring sports.
"He's driven," said UMass Lowell Track and Field Head Coach
Gary Gardner. "Whether it's doing core work or mileage or in the classroom or in a lab he's driven. He is so focused on what he wants to achieve."
For Hogan it is the sixth consecutive season in which he has been honored as the Scholar-Athlete. He has earned the honors twice in Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field and now Outdoor Track and Field.
Hogan, a Civil Engineering grad student, earned the distinction with a 3.57 cumulative grade point average combined with a dominating performance in longer distance races. He has been a regular on the Dean's List throughout his UMass Lowell career. He has been a frequent member of various AE All-Academic teams.
"He has great self discipline'" according to Gardner. "Without question there is a correlation between why he is successful as an athlete and as a student."
Hogan had a terrific outdoor season. He qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events and earned All-America status in the 10,000-meters. Hogan also set a new school record in the 10k. He also won the 5,000 and 10,000-meters at the America East Championships.
