River Hawks Open America East Championship Against Maine on Wednesday

First Pitch
The UMass Lowell baseball team begins its second appearance in the America East Championship with the tournament's opening game against Maine on Wednesday at 11 a.m. The River Hawks wrapped up the four seed with a 2-1 weekend at Stony Brook, who clinched the regular-season title.

Heating Up
The River Hawks enter the postseason with a 8-3 record in May and have won seven of their last eight contests. From May 11-17, UMass Lowell won six straight and outscored opponents 31-15. 

Out For Revenge
Entering the first round matchup, Maine is the only AE team to have swept the River Hawks this season. UMass Lowell is 2-4 in the last six games against the Black Bears.

Who Else But CD?
Ciaran Devenney picked up his second America East Player of the Week award following his performance in the River Hawks 4-1 week to close out the regular season. The junior launched his first career grand slam in the 8-1 win at Stony Brook in the finale, moving into the team lead with six home runs.

River Hawk Leaders
-Oscar Marchena ended the regular season setting career highs with a .331 average, 60 hits and 36 RBI to lead the team in all three categories
-Ciaran Devenney, Steven Passatempo, Vinnie Martin and Cam Climo have combined for 19 of UMass Lowell's 24 home runs
-Freshman Robert Gallagher has swiped 20 bases to rank third in the conference 
-Joshua Becker leads the staff with his 3.98 ERA, while Nick Rand has 75 strikeouts
-UMass Lowell is batting .249 with an 6.32 staff ERA

Scouting Maine
-The Black Bears enter the tournament as the fifth-seed with a 11-12 mark in AE play, and 15-32 overall 
-Joe Bramanti is batting .304, while Hernan Sardinas has 11 home runs, 57 hits and 32 RBI
-Sardinas' homers lead the conference, and he was the only player to reach double digits 
-Trevor DeLaite has a 2.27 ERA with seven saves, while Cody Laweryson has five wins and 67 strikeouts
-Maine is batting .237 with a 5.94 ERA

Oh man, Oscar!
Following his six hit, four RBI performance in the sweep of UMBC, Oscar Marchena picked up his first career America East weekly award as he was named the Co-Player of the Week.

The Rowdys
On May 1,  Joshua Becker was named the Male Rookie of the Year at The Rowdys, UMass Lowell's athletic award show. 

Walkin' Home
Steve Passatempo's walk-off double to take the finale against the Rams was the River Hawks first extra inning victory this season, and the first walk-off victory for the team since March 23, 2018 on Mark Tumosa's walk against UAlbany. 

Thieves in the Night
With Mark Tumosa's steal of home at Boston College, the redshirt junior became the third player with three or more steals in a single game this season, joining Robert Gallagher's performances. This marks the first time since joining Division I that two or more River Hawks have swiped at least three bases in a game. 

Three's Company
In the River Hawks's doubleheader sweep of Binghamton, Ciaran Devenney connected on three home runs, including two in the second victory. The junior is now the team leader with five homers, and he drove in seven runs during the two games. His performance earned him America East Player of the Week honors.

Career Day For Nick
In UMass Lowell's 12-2 win to begin the Binghamton series, Nick Rand struck out a career-high 10 batters in his seven inning performance.

Classic Gallagher
After his four-hit performance in the 11-8 win against UAlbany, Robert Gallagher was named the America East Co-Rookie of the Week. The infielder batted .571 on the week and recorded two RBI with four runs and three stolen bases, all coming in the win. 

The Big 3-0
With his solo home run at UConn, Steven Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) become one of just three players in program history with 30 or more homers in their career. The senior currently ranks in a tie for second all-time with his 31 long balls. 

You Shall Not Pass
In the win against Marist, eight River Hawk pitchers combined to not allow a walk. This marks the first time that the opposing team has not recorded a free pass against UMass Lowell pitchers since May 19, 2018 against Stony Brook, a run of 24 games. The River Hawk hurlers accomplished the feat twice in 2018 and six times at the Division I era.

To The Fifth Power
In the series win at UMBC, UMass Lowell outscored the Retrievers 10-0 in the fifth innings. In the first two contests, the River Hawks were up 3-2 and tied 2-2, before scoring five and four runs in the fifth inning, respectively. 

Forever Young
Following posting a .583 batting average in the UMBC series, Michael Young was named the America East Player of the Week on March 26. Including a 5-5 day at the plate in the River Hawks' second win of the series, Young recorded a 1.167 slugging percentage, four runs and drove in a pair. 

My Cousin Vinnie
Sophomore Vinnie Martin led UMass Lowell at the plate in the George Washington series, picking up six hits, six runs and drove in six runs. Martin also connected on two home runs and recorded five RBI in the River Hawks' 12-1 victory on March 9. He was named the America East Player of the Week, as well.

With his eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings at North Carolina, Joshua Becker earned his first career America East Rookie of the Week award.
 
In the Hole
The River Hawks were voted to the third spot in the America East Coaches' Preseason Poll, marking the highest selection for the program since joining the conference.

Let's Try it Again
Last season, on April 21, in the win against Maine, UMass Lowell suffered only the second no-hitter in program history, with the first came in the opening game of 1977, snapping a streak of 1,730 straight games with at least one hit. The River Hawks have a current streak of 72 games with a hit since.
 
Party of One
Last season, UMass Lowell played in 16 one-run games, including 10 consecutive straight from March 16-31, marking the longest stretch in the nation. The River Hawks went 8-9 in such games in 2018.
 
Notables
The River Hawks won 12 games at LeLacheur Park this season, setting the best mark in the Division I era ... UMass Lowell has recorded five Player of the Week awards (Devenney, Marchena, Devenney, Martin, Young) and two Rookie of the Week accolades (Gallagher, Becker) ... 11 players made their River Hawk debuts in the Arizona series.
