LOWELL, Mass. – Following an off day due to the inclement weather, the UMass Lowell baseball team could not complete the three-game sweep of Binghamton on Easter, falling 4-1 in the finale on Sunday.
Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) went 3-for-4 for the River Hawks (9-27, 6-9), including his first home run of the season in the sixth inning.
"We got outpitched today by a pretty good freshman over there and kept us off balance," noted Head Coach
Ken Harring. "We had some loud outs but he made pitches when he needed to. Kendall {Pomeroy} gave us what he could and gave up a couple of bleeders and hung a breaking ball on the home run. We had some opportunities that we just couldn't cash in on, but the one silver lining of the day was
Henry Funaro."
Henry Funaro (Lowell, Mass.) pitched six scoreless innings out of the pen, and struck out five Bearcat 15-17, 5-6) hitters to keep the visitors at bay.
Binghamton (took its first lead of the series with a three-run home run to left off the bat of Kevin Gsell in the second. The visitors extended their advantage with a two-out RBI double in the top of the third frame.
UMass Lowell got on the board in the sixth on Marchena's (Miami, Fla.) solo shot that was lined over the wall in left.
The hosts threatened in the eighth, after a pair of consecutive bunt singles from
Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) and Marchena to bring the tying run at the plate but could not capitalize.
The River Hawks begin a week of non-conference play at Boston College on Tuesday, April 23. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
