River Hawks make the trek to UMBC for Saturday afternoon tilt

SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: The River Hawks have posted a 4-8 overall record (1-3 AE), after a 15-12 loss against Stony Brook at home last Saturday. The River Hawks currently sit in a tie for fifth place in the America East standings along with UMBC. UMass Lowell owns an identical 2-4 record at home and on the road so far this season. UMass Lowell ranks third in the nation in man-up offense a 51.6% (16-for-31) on the season. The River Hawks have scored four man-up goals in the last three games, which included three goals with the man advantage in the loss to the Seawolves on April 13th. UMass Lowell has scored two or more man-up goals in six of 12 contests this season.

Senior midfielder Cory Highfield (Georgetown, Ont.) leads the team with a career-high 33 points (17g,16a), while sophomore attackman Jake Lining (Rochester, Mich.) has posted a career-high 18 goals to lead the River Hawks' roster. Junior attackman Dan Cozzi (Reading, Mass.) leads the team with 26 assists in nine games and his 2.9 assists per game rank seventh nationally. A total of five River Hawks have scored 10+ goals in 2019, including Highfield, Lining, Domenic Giachello (Somers, Conn.) with 15, William Russo (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) with 12 and Isaac Bot (Calgary, Alta.) all of which are new career-highs, respectively. Freshman face-off midfielder Liam McDonough (Groton, Mass.) ranks 14th in the nation with 7.6 ground balls per game, which leads all America East players.

Senior goalie Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) has started 10 of 12 contests for the River Hawks, posting a 12.28 GAA and .513 save percentage, to go along with a 3-7 record. He has made 10+ saves in five of his last seven starts for UMass Lowell. Lardieri  has amassed 67 stops in his last four contests for an average of 16.8 saves per game for the River Hawks over that four-game span. He totaled 18 saves in his last start vs. Stony Brook. 

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC enters Saturday's Senior Day contest with a 3-7 overall record and a 1-3 record in AE play. The Retrievers own a 3-2 record at home so far this season. UMBC is coming off a 9-7 loss at UAlbany on Saturday, ad Taylor Bohanan posted a team-high two goals and Tommy Lingner amassed 12 saves in the losing effort. Junior attackman Ryan Frawley (26g, 3a) leads the team with 29 points, closely followed by sophomore linemate Trevor Patschorke at 28 (15g, 13a). Frawley is the America East leader with 2.6 goals scored per game.

LAST TIME OUT: Junior attackman Dylan Rhatigan (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored a career-high four goals in the 15-12 loss to Stony Brook on Saturday night in America East play at Cushing Field Complex. UMass Lowell scored the first three goals in the fourth quarter to cut the Stony Brook lead to one goal at 10-9, but then the Seawolves score another two goals followed by another three goals for the River Hawks. SBU scored the final three goals of the contest to seal the win for the Seawolves. Jake Lining (Rochester, Mich.) and Dan Cozzi (Reading, Mass.) reach added two goals apiece. Cozzi finished the day with a game-high seven points and four shots on goal. The River Hawks outshot SBU, 27-18 in the second half. Stony Brook held a 7-5 lead at halftime. Freshman face-off midfielder Liam McDonough (Groton, Mass.) totaled 16 face-off wins and 13 ground balls in the loss.  Senior goalie Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) amassed 18 saves in net for the River Hawks in the losing effort, while SBU's Michael Bollinger notched 11 saves his seventh win of the season for the Seawolves. Tom Haun totaled a team-best four goals and six points in the victory for Stony Brook. 

AMERICA EAST LEADERS: Dan Cozzi leads the conference with 2.9 assists per game, while Cory Highfield's 1.3 assists per game is tied for fifth best in America East and his 6.2 shots per game is eighth best in the league. Grant Lardieri leads America East contests with 16.0 saves per game and his  64 saves in AE games is second most among conference goalies.

DID YOU KNOW?: Liam McDonough with eight ground balls at St. John's on March 23rd broke the program's single-season ground ball record set by Will Puduski (70) in 2018. McDonough has amassed a team-high 91 ground balls in his freshman season. The River Hawks will honor their 10-member senior class in a pre-game ceremony on Friday, April 26th against Binghamton (7:30pm) at Cushing Field Complex.
