River Hawks entertain Vermont in AE home opener Saturday night

SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: The River Hawks registered a 3-6 overall record (0-1 AE), after a pair of losses to Providence and St. John's last week. UMass Lowell owns a 1-3 home record so far this season in four home contests. The River Hawks hit the double-digit goal mark at St. John's last Saturday for the fifth time this season in nine total games. UMass Lowell ranks eighth in the nation in man-up offense a 48% (12-for-25) on the season, scoring six man-up goals in the last four contests. 

Senior midfielder Cory Highfield (Georgetown, Ont.) leads the team with a career-high 26 points and 14 goals in his senior season. Junior attackman Dan Cozzi (Reading, Mass.) leads the team with 17 assists in six games. A total of four River Hawks have scored 10+ goals in 2019, including Highfield, Jake Lining (Rochester, Mich.), Domenic Giachello (Somers, Conn.) and William Russo (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). 

Senior goalie Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) has started seven of nine games for the River Hawks, posting a 12.94 GAA and .449 save percentage. He has made 10+ saves in three of his last four starts for UMass Lowell.

SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS: Vermont owns a 5-3 overall record and a 2-0 record in America East play headed into Saturday's contest. The Catamounts own a 2-2 road record in four games and a perfect 3-0 record at home. The 'Cats have won their last two games, including victories at UMBC (12-11 2 OT) on March 16th and Hartford (15-6) last Saturday. Liam Limoges leads the team in scoring with 24 points and 11 assists, while Ben French leads the Catamounts' squad with 17 goals. Nick Washuta has started all eight games for the Catamounts, posting a 9.72 GAA and a .564 save percentage.

LAST TIME OUT: Junior attackman Isaac Bot (Calgary, Alta.) scored a career-high five goals to pace the UMass Lowell Men's Lacrosse team in a 15-13 loss at St. John's on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field in non-conference action. St. John's scored seven straight goals from the mid point of the third quarter through six minutes of the fourth quarter before Bot scored his fifth of the day to pull the River Hawks to within a goal at 13-12 with 8:33 to play in the contest. 
The River Hawks got three straight goals to start the third quarter from Bot, Brandon Beland (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Domenic Giachello (Somers, Conn.) to take the 11-6 lead. Giachello and William Russo (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) notched two goals apiece in the loss for the River Hawks. UMass Lowell held an 8-6 lead at halftime. Senior Grant Lardieri (Ada, Mich.) totaled 14 saves in the losing effort for UMass Lowell, while Brody Agres recorded four saves in the victory for the Red Storm. Freshman face-off midfielder Liam McDonough (Groton, Mass.) amassed eight ground balls and won 14 of 28 (50%) face-offs for the River Hawks. 

MCDONOUGH CONTINUES STRONG ROOKIE SEASON: Freshman face-off midfielder Liam McDonough (Groton, Mass.) leads the team with 73 ground balls and 123 face-off victories for a 61% win percentage. He has totaled 10 or more ground balls three times this season with a career-high 14 on March 16th at UAlbany and has posted a career-high 22 face-off wins twice this season. McDonough's 8.1 ground balls per game and 73 ground balls leads America East, while his 123 face-off wins and his 61% face-off win percentage is also tops in the conference. His 8.1 ground balls per game is 11th best among NCAA players and his 61% face-off win percentage is 16th best in the nation. 

AMERICA EAST LEADERS: Dan Cozzi leads America East with 2.8 assists per contest and his 3.5 points per game ranks third in the league. Cory Highfield's 2.9 points per game and 5.9 shots per game ranks eighth among AE players. Eric Flynn's (Bedford, N.H.) 2.0 caused turnovers per game is tied for second among America East players and his 3.8 ground balls is the fourth best total in the league. Cam Hult ranks sixth in the conference with 3.6 ground balls per game and 1.4 caused turnovers per contest.
