The UMass Lowell baseball team begins its sixth season of America East play this weekend, making the trek the Baltimore for a three-game set with the UMBC Retrievers. 
 
First Pitch
Last season the River Hawks took their conference opening series against UAlbany with two wins. UMass Lowell also swept UMBC in the teams' only meeting last season, outscoring the visitors 20-3 over three games at LeLacheur.

-Oscar Marchena is batting .282 with 20 hits, while Cam Climo has 31total bases
-The trio of Climo, Steven Passatempo and Vinnie Martin have hit seven of the team's eight homers
-Martin leads the pack with 11 RBI, while Marchena, Climo and Passatempo each have nine
-Joshua Becker leads the staff with his 3.66 ERA and 27 strikeouts out of the pen
-UMass Lowell is batting .235 with 9.41 staff ERA
 
My Cousin Vinnie
Sophomore Vinnie Martin led UMass Lowell at the plate in the George Washington series, picking up six hits, six runs and drove in six runs. Martin also connected on two home runs and recorded five RBI in the River Hawks' 12-1 victory on March 9. He was named the America East Player of the Week, as well.

With his eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings at North Carolina, Joshua Becker earned his first career America East Rookie of the Week award.

-The Retrievers are 5-9 with a 0-3 mark in AE play
-Christian Torres leads the lineup with a .367 average with 18 hits, 13 runs scored, three triples, one home run and 12 RBI
-Nick Trabacchi has a 4.67 ERA, while Stephen Scohch has recorded 16 batters

The River Hawks rank second in the conference with 79 runs scored. Passatempo and Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) are sixth and eighth with 11 and 10 runs scored, respectively.

The River Hawks were voted to the third spot in the America East Coaches' Preseason Poll, marking the highest selection for the program since joining the conference.

Last season on April 21 in the win against Maine, UMass Lowell suffered only the second no-hitter in program history, with the first came in the opening game of 1977, snapping a streak of 1,730 straight games with at least one hit. The River Hawks have a current streak of 37 games with a hit since.
 
Party of One
Last season, UMass Lowell played in 16 one-run games, including 10 consecutive straight from March 16-31, marking the longest stretch in the nation. The River Hawks went 8-9 in such games in 2018.
